  • Oh, how true...!!

    Personally , I liked the 2000 version...

    1. Teaching Maths In 1970

A logger sells a truck load of timber for $1000. His cost of production is 4/5 of the selling price. What is his profit?

    2. Teaching Maths In 1980

A logger sells a truck load of timber for $1000. His cost of production is 4/5 of the selling price, or $800. What is his profit?

    3. Teaching Maths In 1990

A logger sells a truck load of timber for $1000. His cost of production is $800. Did he make a profit

    4. Teaching Maths In 2000

A logger sells a truck load of timber for $1000. His cost of production is $800 and his profit is $200. Your
    assignment: Underline the number 200.

    5. Teaching Maths In 2008

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is totally selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands.

He does this so he can make a profit of $200. What do you think of this way of making a living?

Topic now for class participation after answering the question:
How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers. If you are upset about the plight of the animals in question counselling will be available.)
When I said "From my research", what I actually meant to say was "Made shit up" - from a thottbot thread

Hahaha. What's really sad is that it's true. We had to write essays in math class when it had nothing to do with math.

Let the english teachers teach writing. Let the math teachers teach math. Variables should be the only letters in math.

And for maximum purity, those should be Greek letters. Pi (∏) for example.

No, you need letters for algebra. Also x,y,z. Hard to map coordinates without those.

In the math portion of the W.A.S.L (washington assesment of student learning)
Probably about 5 years or so ago, there was an awesome question.

          It went something like this.

Joe has to drive his truck for deliveries, find the shortest/quickest route.

Town Kay is x miles from Tourno, town Lee is x miles from Kay and town Mary is x miles from tourno....

Answer = Mary Kay Lee Tourno. ( for those of you that don't know she 'fell in love ' with a 6th grader and had 2 kids with him)
