My hubby and I volunteer as cooks/servers/cleanup at a local church kitchen. Twice a month, we do either a big breakfast, or dinner for the community. Some of the food is donated by local supermarkets, and we request a small donation from those who partake to pay for the rest. It has been going on for a few years. Hubby's been volunteering there for 5 years, and I started helping as soon as I moved here in Nov.
We've been having issues with some entitled young families coming in and loading up their plates but not donating a single penny - these are kids with brand-name sports jerseys, new running shoes, fancy cars, but apparenlty are "too poor" to put a dollar or 2 in the kitty (yet they always have cigs that they smoke as they leave.)
2 weekends ago, we had an incident during one of the dinners - halfway through the meal, Tweaker Guy (TG) and his Baby Mama (BM) came in. They LOAD their plates up with food (no donation) and while BM starts scarfing her food down, TG goes over to the dessert table where there's an assortment of pies made by the ladies auxiliary. He takes three empty boxes from under the table, and puts WHOLE PIES in the boxes, then takes them back to their table.
After they eat, he goes back to the buffet and takes three plates full of ham, chicken, and sausages back to their table, and BM then puts them into a ziploc bag.
On the way out, they're stopped by the Pastor, who tells them that food is not to be taken out of the eating area. TG starts screaming at him, with BM egging him on, and he actually pulled his hand back like he was going to hit the Pastor. Cue no less than 5 guys jumping up from their chairs to come to the Pastor's aid. Hubby takes pies and plates out of TG's hands, and the rest of the guys escort them from the church, telling them they aren't welcome.
Apparently something similar happened yesterday at breakfast (hubbs and I were in NY visiting his folks so we weren't there,) and the Church elders have decided to shut the kitchen down and stop doing any more dinners/breakfasts.
I'm beyond angry - not only does it mean that quite few individuals who are homeless/low income no longer can come and get a good meal, we also would do boxed meals that one of the volunteers drove around to shut-ins and those too ill to come to the church. So now they don't get these meals either. Why is it always that some entitled SOB's have to ruin it for everyone else?
