  • How on Earth is there not a Pacific Rim thread.

    My entire review of this movie is summed up as: go see it right the fuck now. Here's the plot: giant monster spawn out of a wormhole in the ocean, giant robots piloted by people from all around the world got into the ocean and fight the monsters. And the movie makers are competent.

    It's beautiful, and I mean that as in the alien designs are beautiful and the combat is mostly done at night with neon lighting.

    This is a big screen experience. I still am buzzing from this movie and hour after it ended.

      The movie was basically a love letter by Del Toro to mecha anime and kaiju films. It hit all the tropes you'd see in one, didn't it?

      [SPOILERS BELOW!!]

      Traumatized Veteran (Raleigh) called back into action by Badass Marshal (Stacker), comes to forge a relationship (hinted to become romantic later) with the Talented But Inexperienced Rookie (Mako).

      Then you have the Cocky Rival (Chuck) and his Well-Known Aging Hero Father (Herc), with the other jaeger pilots, the Silent Giant Husky Russkies, and the Chinese Triplets. Also in the command center is the Hyper-Competent Sidekick to the Marshal (Tendo), and the pair of Bickering Scientists, one being a Kaiju Groupie (Newt) and the other a Stiff-Necked Brit (Herman).

      Then you go into Hong Kong and you've got the Sleazy Underworld Boss who profits on the misery (Hannibal Chau).

      The Kaiju come across as immediately threatening in every scene, even without the initial exposition about the start of the Kaiju War. Knifehead (the Alaskan Kaiju) takes down our hero's Jaeger and kills his brother with seeming ease. The Sea Wall which was supposed to be their ultimate defense, is breached EASILY by another Kaiju in Sydney. Then the double event in Hong Kong with Leatherback and Otachi wipes out half of the remaining Jaegers with ease. Even when Gipsy Danger joins in the fight and takes down Leatherback, they end up having to drain their plasma batteries to take him down, and then they still have to deal with the acid-spitting, tail-swinging, flying Otachi, which still nearly kills them.

      Granted, we later find out that the Kaiju aren't just instinct-driven monsters, but genetically-engineered weapons created by an alien race, connected by a hive mind. When Newt drifts with the Kaiju brain that first time, it not only makes him a target (because he knows too much now), but he knew exactly which Jaegers were left, and it allowed the aliens to customize the next event appropriately to disable them.

      This also explains why the last three Kaiju that Striker and Gipsy had to face at the Breach were so tough. The aliens knew what the humans' plan was and sent out two of their strongest Category Fours (Raiju and Scunner) and a Category Five (Slattern) to defend it. Even though Raiju was taken out pretty easily when Gipsy cut it in half, it still managed to rip off one of Gipsy's arms, and Scunner survived getting its head impaled and half-burned by a thermal vent. Slattern took a nuke to the face and still managed to come back to try to stop Gipsy from going through the Breach.

      [END SPOILERS!!]

      The movie was a lot better than I thought it was going to be, and I loved it. It's not perfect, but it hits all the right notes and it's very enjoyable.

        I got a very strong cthulhu vibe from it too. Giant undersea/land creatures? Check. Quirky intellectuals (Miskatonic U)? Check.

        Charlie Day was a riot.

          So, basically, they stole from the South Park Coon & Friends trilogy?

          Sounds like all they need is Captain hindsight and the BP exec doing the "We're sorry" apology commercials.

            Here's the thing about Pacific Rim and cliches, they are all over the place but I wasn't rolling my eyes I was demanding more.

                I don't even like kaiju or mecha stuff, and I loved the hell out of this movie. I was tempted to stand up during the credits and yell, "In your FACE, Michael Bay!" THIS is how you do a giant battle robot movie!!

                And hey, how fantastic was Ron Perlman?

                And the soundtrack!!! SO DAMN GOOD.

                  Pacific Rim was everything I wanted and more. And it almost has me wanting to get in on HeroClix because of the associated Clix from the film.

                      This movie was awesome. I'm glad I braved food poisoning to go (I'd gotten sick the night before/that morning, but was feeling well enough that night to make it. Go my awesome immune system)

                      My only real gripe, the other Jaegers needed more limelight.

                      Spoiler Alert ++++++
                      It was a touch of "here's the Chinese Jaeger, Here's the Russian one, they're bad asses... and.... they're dead" Even one decent brawl would have been nice
                      +++++

                        Saw it, loved it. Best popcorn movie in years, and definitely worth the theater price. Even picked up the first wave of action figures, and hoping NECA makes the rest of the Jaegers.
                        Cheap, fast, good. Pick two.

                          I want some GunPla figures for the Jaegers, honestly. Would love to build Jaeger models.

                            I'm seeing Jaegar and kaiju action figures coming out, so with luck, model kits won't be far behind.
                            And just for amusement, not all Jaegars have good names...

                            BTW, I LOVED the movie!

                              BTW, if you're on Twitter, you should follow the screenwriter, @travisbeacham. He's a pretty cool guy anyway, and it's so cute to see him geeking out over people liking his movie. He's also reposting some really awesome fan art.

                              And I really, really want some sort of Jaeger Crew t-shirt or tank. I think it would be very motivating when exercising.
