Yes there are Sunday lookie Lou's. there's nothing wrong with that.

I've never understood why paying cash matters really. Finance or cash. Doesn't matter to me. I get paid off the sales slip.

The trade in at the last minute to get an "honest price" thing you see in all these "how to buy a car" books is total bullshit. Wanna know why we like to see it up front?

EVERYONE THINKS THEIR TRADE IN IS WORTH MORE THAN IT IS!

If I see it early I can take money off the vehicle you're buying and put it into the trade in to show you a bigger number. When you beat me down $2000 and then tell me you're trading in, and I show you $500 for it. You're gonna be pissed. Where before I coulda given you the same deal and shown you $2500 for your trade in.

Often what happens is they'll storm out after I've given away the car over the trade in, goto the next dealership and tell them they walked over the trade. So that dealer will inflate the number of the trade in and bag the sale

That's just one of the things I've heard. That salesmen (and sometimes the dealership) hate it when people negotiate down, then say, "I'm paying cash". I think the reason is they think that the sales guy gets less than he/she would if they actually financed.

I think the thought behind this is the following: If you negotiate down first, then say "I have a trade-in", that means that the "trade in" value will also get knocked off the price, and they'll get a "better" deal. Not saying that's true, but that it could be one line of thinking.

EVERYONE THINKS THEIR TRADE IN IS WORTH MORE THAN IT IS!
Aren't there laws now that dictate what a minimum amount can be for a trade-in? I've heard that there is, and that it's around $3,000. And I've also heard that, because of this, some dealerships will actually refuse a trade if the car isn't in good enough shape.

Others, however, I've seen advertise "We'll give you $3,000 for your trade-in, no matter what condition it's in!!" (or something along those lines).

This thread is now like "Secrets of a former car salesman..."

        Half an hour!?!?

How did you manage to pull that off??
US Navy husband, pristine credit history, preauthorised loan from Navy Fed Cred, local dealer, no trade in. Looked *seriously pissed off and frazzled* and told the guy right off the bat "I have been to 5 dealerships where they have tried to sell to my roomie instead of ME, you want to sell a car, you deal with me and cut the fucking bullshit. I can walk out of the 6th dealership very easily at this point." I pointed to a white golf sitting next to his desk, said I like it, I want it, I drove one already. Where is the paperwork and I will pay now with a preauthorized loan. He got me a cup of coffee, printed out the paperwork and I signed it, called my insurance dealer, got the card faxed over and they pulled it out of the office through the big glass doors, filled the tank and gave me the keys.

Took longer for the insurance card to get faxed over than I thought. It helps that the credit union is local and is on good terms with a number of the better car dealers franchises.

I'm in Canada so am unfamiliar with the laws in the states but here I've paid $500 and up for trades. I do k is that each province has a sales authority that's run by the government. They require a re sold vehicle have no issues. So your trade in is evaluated based on that.

Lol well I hope I can give the inside view so that people can see that car sakes is actually a rough gig. And give some advice so that you get what you need and the sales guy gets to eat

I just bought a car a few months ago. What took the most time was the application and the credit check. The salesperson was a sweetheart, and he was very patient and extremely helpful. I think if you do the research as to which place you want to go, you'll get a better caliber of people to buy from.

I will never do a trade again. We got burned on our last one. Anything over 100k miles goes to addiction anyway. And I never keep a car fewer than that. Most are at least 130k miles. I plan to keep my present one until it hits 299,999. At which point the dash cluster breaks and won't accumulate any more miles . It's at 112k now, so I should hit that in under 5 years.

Again. Everyone thinks their trade in is a super special deal and thinks every car is worth $5000 and up. Look at kijiji. It's retarded what people want

                  Here's a fun fact:

After 150,000 k any domestic vehicle is considered worthless.

Honda and Toyota are after 300,000

Heck, when we traded in the (then) 5 year old Dakota hubby still owed $2k on it, we were just looking for that to be paid off. When they offered $3k we were thrilled. It did have a new transmission (1 year old and hubby was deployed for most of that), new paint (4 months old, peeled while under warranty) and new tires (2 weeks old). One of the salespeople ended up buying it for his son after their mechanics looked it over.

We still have all the original paperwork on the Silverado, it was the first new vehicle we bought. One of the best things we did when hubby was med discharged was pay it off.

The craziest trade in I ever saw was when mom traded her RAV4 in to get a new Corolla. The RAV was 11 years old, and the transmission has, quite literally, fallen out of it. Why? Cause my mom has a very bad back.. and used to blow her driveway with it. We're talking 3.5 feet or more, with no actual plow blade, just gunning the car through it. Toyota gave her almost 3k for it. One of the mechanics took it, rebuilt it, and its' STILL on the road. The thing is 16 years old.

When me and hubs went to get our Yaris, our financing took a half hour. We ended up getting it for less then 12k (was worth 18k). What took the longest was getting it shipped across the province :P Took a whole 2 days. Whoop-de-doo.

Kinda helps when my mom's been buying Toyotas since 1992, and hubs aunt is the financial manager.

Not me. for sure NOT me.

I am a pizza delivery driver. Not that I abuse my vehicles BUT my job does. IK do a LOT of short distance stop-and-go urban driving. I have owned my current vehicle for just over 5 years (it is a 2000 model year) and put over 130K hard miles on it (in total the car has around 165K on the clock). Lots of repairs AND things that should have been fixed have NOT been fixed because of the cost of repairs

One of the local dealers had a blowout used/pre-owned car msale about a month ago. Well since mine is getting up I thought I would take a look around.

First most of their offerings were above $12K which is a little more than I wanted to pay. After finding a nice 2 year old 40K miles 4 door Korean car for around $13.5K the sales guy tried to convince me that they would "allow" for at least $3K to $3.5K as a trade in value bring the "price" for the car I was interesting in to around $10k (a little above my price range considering what I presently do for a living ).

There is NO way my car would be worth that amount even for a trade in. Yes I have check on-line and found vehicles that are the same year and model and features but with 175K miles for around $3k to $3.5K but those were in a LOT better condition than mine.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

                          Another fun fact:

"Blow out sales" "push pull or drag 3k guarantee"

They either build that into the prices of the vehicles or use a hidden rebate from the manufacturer to bump the trade value

                            About Sales Man Relationship=
I don't know about everyone else, but my house is like a three vehicle house. It has been for a few years, though I don't think we ever had all of them on the road at once due to issues. Still, it's a huge pain to have servicing all over the place, so my father gets very branded. Even if he is buying from a private dealer, he still buys the same make. Right now it's Chevy. That way if we need new paint, keys cut, service that can only be done by dealership; we don't have to run all over the province the get the work done. So it is actually really important for us to have a relationship with one of the sales people, because until the company screws us we will stick with them. It's just simpler for him.

Side Note= My cousin's husband actually works for the local chevy dealership and has a bad tendency to always try to get Dad to trade in or buy a new vehicle. There are other people in the family who work for car companies, but they know better than to shit where they eat. I mean, he does it at like family dinners and stuff.

                            About Trade Ins
I had no idea how much my 2005 would be worth if I tried trading it in, but I babied it so I thought it would be okay. It had about 55,000KM on it when I got it in 2010, so I figured if I could keep it under 11,000km annually then when I decided to trade it in, I MIGHT get a good amount for it. I stuck to my plan really well, and it only ever needed to go to the shop to get the wheels aligned. Absolutely ZERO issues. So last May when I left it in the possession of my brother and dad is had about 76,000km on it and was in perfect condition. When my brother visited 2 weeks ago, one of the side blinkers was broken, the front passenger seat belt was frayed in a way that makes buckling complicated, the inside of the doors are scratched for some reason, and the odometer is at I think 126, 000KM. Plus it's been in the shop a bunch. IT makes me sad.

Yes, got burned. A 5 year old Escape with every conceivable option package on it. Private party was 10k at the time, trade in was 8k. Between the kids and being at the dealership for nearly 8 hours and both the missus and I talking to the sales person I missed the fact that they were only going to give us 4k on trade. I got almost that amount on a 10 year old Accord I traded in on the Escape! It had or was just about to cross the 100k mile threshold, and since the dealer would essentially make nothing off it with having to sell at auction, they low balled the hell out of the trade. The ONLY reason I didn't private party is I didn't want to deal with trying to find some schmoe that can bring you 8-10k in cash.

Given how many options you have now and how easy it is to put something up on craigslist, I'll never trade again. Private party all the way for any future sales of vehicles I own but no longer want.

Fords depreciate WAY faster than Hondas. A tuakky Honda still has the best resale value out there as far as trade ins are concerned, so I'm not really surprised by that at all.
