So I've started knitting again and am in the process of trying to teach myself how to crochet. I've been collecting the knit n stitch series since I can actually afford them given I'm not spending everything on food!

The series itself consists of a bunch of pattern cards plus 2 balls of yarn and sometimes a set of needles as well per issue. I've knitted one square so far in garter stitch (that is, you knit all the stitches on both sides). So today I thought I'd try the square in stocking stitch.
Had a nice big fat d'oh moment when I started the purl rows. I thought I was doing it correctly, but it turns out I wasn't. What I hadn't been doing was going from the top down, instead I'd been going from the bottom up like you do with a knit stitch.

The kicker? It took me 4 rows and three viewings of a video tutorial app I have on here, to work that one out.

Thats ok, I was randomly doing stumbleupon, and it lead me to a 'serenity loom' knitting doodad, and for the life of me I can see how you start the thing, and do the first few rows but they don't show anything past a couple of rows. I can't *see* in my mind how you end up with a sheet of knitting from one of these damned things. It seems to my eyes that the stitches pile up on the pegs but don't do the hang down thing. *sigh* I hate being a got to see ALL of it learner.

For some reason, the serenity loom makes me think of a giant french knitting spool....

I joked at one point to the staff at work that I should bring in an actual giant circular loom to show the kids just how big a spool of French knitting could be.

As for my knitting, it looks like I'm finally doing it right. I was meant to be doing stocking/ette stitch for this particular square (where you knit one row and purl another...for the unfamiliar, if you ever look at a cardigan and see those v-shaped rows, that's roughly what stocking stitch resembles), but the garter stitch at the beginning where I messed up actually works with it because this particular square is going next to my garter stitch square. All I have to do is just sew them together and it'll look like I knitted them at the same time.

I can't knot for crap, I can do simple crochet however.

I was sitting at an SCA event a few years back watching some guy doing kumihimo - that was neat. he had a huge drum. I do lucet weaving to make the braid lace for my elizabethan stuff - it is basically 2 post knitting. I also have dabbled in tablet weaving - lots of fun but you have to basically be able to finish the project fairly quickly because if it is an intricate pattern you can lose your place so damned easily.

I wish I had been able to film and photograph my sheep to shawl project - though we do have a fairly obscure picture somewhere of Gil and Rob shearing the sheep, I don't have pictures of the kettle I made, the loom and drop weights, the tools and the process of spinning, scouring, dying, weaving and finishing the bog gown. And the soap making, of course - sheep fat and wood ash lye. Better part of a year working solo. It makes one appreciate what work they went through preindustrial era for clothing. No wonder people had only 3 or 4 sets of clothing.

But then again, retting flax to make linen is a pain in the rump, I can see the neighbors letting me rot plants in stagnant water and then pounding it into separate fibers.

In my group, we do have people doing lucet and tablet weaving. One guy (who has since moved to the country) actually rigged up this little contraption that held all the cards and whatnot. It was amazing!

Inkel looms - dates back to the 1600s Lots of weavers don't bother with them using a sort of backstrap loom and then there are those that like intricate toys

So will the garter stitch square be at the top of the stocking stitch square?

Just curious, but does it have a built-in light - powered by a Firefly?
