  • I moved...

... back to my old condo complex!

Two years ago, my sister needed my mother to move to her house to take care of her two kids. So naturally, not wanting to be left behind, my dad and I followed.

After countless troubles about which stuff we can bring up and which needs to be discarded, basement renovations into an "in-law" suite, and two years of nagging, arguments and general tension in a house of 8 people, the mutual decision was that it would be better for us all if we found our own place to live.

That was two months ago. Now we're all happy, but the place is still a mess. It will take at least a week to set everything up again, but I'm happy that we have internet now.

    What happened when you moved?

Beginning of the year -- I moved from da Big Easy up to small-town northern Mississippi, or reasons that could be summarized as psycho roomie trouble (literally)/money/closer to family/GTFO that house. Old place -- had been renting for over 30 years, and it had accumulated ...stuff...slowly all that time. New place -- a "mother-in-law's apartment" that has seen better days, on bro's property. Roughly the size of the old den.

Much stuff got left behind, including -- at my bro's demand (he took care of ALL of the expenses, and his car got stolen from the area where he was staying x.x)-- the one big dresser and bookcase I wanted to bring. I get there, it's been several months now, and he complains that all of my books are still in their boxes and I'm living out of suitcases... Whose fault is that, I wonder?
Upside -- I'm 10 minutes from Mom, and literally in bro's backyard so I can spend time with his liddle kiddles, the eldest of which I am helping to learn to read.

The last time I moved, it was at the end of July... in Arizona. I ended up with heat exhaustion, shockingly.

Luckily, there were several people helping with the move, so it didn't just grind to a halt right then and there.

We hired two movers to load and unload stuff. All the rest (disassembly and reassembly of furniture) was up to us. Fortunately, my sister and brother-in-law were a MASSIVE help!

Moved cities with what I could fit in my car in May 2011. Parents moved the rest of my stuff down in July 2012. Most of it is still in boxes in the garage because I now rent a room instead of a house.

I had to move out of my apartment before I closed on my condo, so all my stuff got tetrised into my parents' garage. Closed a week and a half later. Since I had some stuff to do in the condo (painting, appliances, carpet cleaning...) and it was close to the holidays, I stayed at my parents' house from the week before Thanksgiving through mid-January. Then I recruited my friend and her husband and their pickup truck to move my furniture and gradually moved the rest of the stuff by car. Been here a year and a half and the place is still a mess...

I moved 850 miles, from Ohio to Florida at the end of June due to my mother being ill.

It was...no picnic, to say the least.

I've still got tons of boxes of my screened porch marked '(my name) winter'. I don't think I'll need much of it down here, but I can't bear to part with some of it, especially my hooded sweatshirts.

I bought my first home three years ago. I was the last child to officially leave home and my mom and dad were looking forward to it being just the two of them. The closing date for my house wasn't until the end of the month, so I worked out the time frame of 30 days to clear out my things (purge wardrobe, pack boxes, etc). During this time, my sister had unexpectedly put her house up for sale as a short sale. The next weekend I had to move 12 years worth of stuff out of the finished basement suite of my parents' home into their spare bedroom upstairs while my sister, her husband, and their youngest child (teenager) moved in. Most of my belongings ended up in a storage unit, including my bed, tv, and stereo system. Six people, one bathroom, a bevy of combined domesticated animals (including my cat who was cooped up in the spare bedroom because she didn't like my sister's two cats and who used to have the run of the house) in a 900 square foot home for 30 days. I wanted to shoot myself.

But on the plus side, it was only for 30 days and my actual move to the new house was a piece of cake after that fiasco.

At least you only needed to deal with them for 30 days. I was dragged to my sister's house and stayed in the "pressure cooker" for TWO YEARS! My sister and I both needed our mommy, but we lived in separate houses before the move.

It's a good thing my nephews are cute and adorable, though. I miss them now.

I was only 11 at the time, but we moved from south florida to Tennessee where they currently live.

They put their house on the market, for $65,000 (I believe), within a week they had an offer for full asking price....

We hadn't even finished finding a house up here yet!

My brother and I had been shipped off to grandma's house for the summer for the move (up in Maine), but mom and dad both had 30 days to find and close on a house, pack a 4 bedroom house with all furniture, and move with 2 cats!

When mom came to pick us up and visit for a while, she related the horror story of the frantic move. When we arrived, the bedrooms were barely put together (clothes found, and bed put together), and had found out that school started last week...

First 3 months we lived in the house we lived out of the boxes, between mom and dad trying to find jobs, brother and I in school.

happily...20 years later mom and dad are still in the same house with lots of memories with it.

When I was about 8 or 9, my Dad and I moved in with my grandmother after my dad had lost his job and couldn't find a new in time.

Now that I think about it, I have no idea where we put most of our stuff. It was a one bedroom apartment, with my dad and I sleeping in the living room with him on the day bed and me on the little bed that rolled out underneath.

At the end of 3rd grade, we ended up moving from the Bay Area of California to Western New York to be closer to the rest of my dad's side of the family and so my grandmother could be with her two daughters in New York.

My dad and I drove cross country with all the plants and my grandmother's two cats in the bed of the truck (it had a cap on it) and a cockatiel in a small travel cage on boxes in the space behind and between the seats of the truck.

It took 4 days and 2 minutes (left at 11:28 am June 13th 1997, arrived 2:30pm June 17th.) and it was a lot of fun. We stopped at Yellowstone and spent a good part of the day there and getting stuck in a herd of buffalo/bison on our way out of the park and also spent a morning at Mount Rushmore.

When we arrived, we brought the animals into the house and put the cats into what was going to be my grandmother's room when she arrived and shut the door. A few hours later my uncle had popped his head into the room to check on the cats.... who were not in the room.

Turns out they had pulled down one of the cool air intake vents and crawled into the air ducts. These cats were seriously neurotic. It took three days to get the cats out of the air ducts. The vent fixed, we locked them back into the room, only for them to get into the closet and move a panel and wedge themselves behind the tub. (There's an access point to shut off the water to the tub only behind it, but you have to go in through that bedroom closet to get to it.)

Movers drove the u-haul cross country and were delayed a few days, which being before cellphones were a common thing was quite an interesting panic among the adults in my life. My grandmother flew out about 2 weeks after my dad and I arrived.

All other moves after that have seemed like a piece of cake to me.

The feng shui in this condo was all messed up last week. First, we had to set up our home phone and cable; to this day, we still rely on our cell phones. Next, Mom and I switched rooms because the room I was in was so cramped, I felt claustrophobic.

Then we found a car parked in our 2-car parking space! Mom waited for the whole day Friday in the security office for the tow truck to show up when out of the blue, the owner's brother knocks at my door! I told him to call my mother and gave him her cell number. Turns out the owner is in EUROPE, and we have to wait until next Wednesday for him to get his car out of our space! Meanwhile, we have to get a visitor's parking permit for our cars every night until then.

So we rearranged the furniture downstairs, hoping all will be well soon.

Why didn't the brother move the car? Or pay a tow truck to move it for him? Why don't you pay for a tow truck to get rid of the stupid thing?

We actually were WILLING to pay for the truck. Mom even had the cash in her hand. HOWEVER, that's the time when the brother shows up, and wanting to be nice, we cancelled the tow. We're waiting until the owner comes back on Wednesday.

The brother didn't move the car because he couldn't. He didn't have the keys, and I'm pretty sure that the owner would be VERY PISSED at him if he called the tow truck while the owner was gone!

Did I mention that the car doesn't have any licence plates? Probably to avoid paying fines!

You think he'd be angry at his own brother for (potentially) saving his car?

...Yeah, okay, what sympathy I might've had for the owner goes out the window with that. I would've told the brother, "Get that wreck out of my parking spot or I'll have it removed." Then I would've called Argabarga.
