  • Healthy desserts/snacks?

So I find myself craving some munches from time to time at home. And no, not because I'm smoking doobies....I'm not. But even after a not small pasta dinner tonight, still find myself wanting something more. And I often find myself wanting a little something something, be it a snack or dessert. But I'd like to keep it at least somewhat healthy. Sweets are great, but they are an occasional thing for me. Very occasional. As in rare. (Except when Girl Scouts are selling their cookies. Then all bets are off.)

    So, what are your suggestions?

Now, the obvious answer is fruit. And I love fruit. I also eat it for breakfast every day, and don't want to overdo it, for three reasons. One, you CAN overdo anything, even fruit. Two, somehow I've managed to eat a fruit breakfast just about every day for a year without getting sick of it. I'd like to continue not being sick of fruit. Three, I really like variety!

    So....suggestions? FEED ME!

Edited to Add: By the way, when I say "healthy," remember, I am not a health nut. I eat relatively healthy, including plenty of fruit, veggies, salads, fish, etc,, but I am not adverse to nor against pizza, buffalo wings, and beer. And sometimes beer. Ad of course beer. S "healthy" snacks is relative. Something good to munch in, something semi nutritious and filling, and something that involves little or no prep on my part (unless it's something I make a big batch of every so often that lasts a while). And of course it has to taste good. So, with those criteria, fried cheese balls, jelly beans, and Twinkies are clearly out.

By the way--and I'm not kidding on this one--the first person to mention rice cakes gets a smack in the head. People have been trying to push those things on me for years, and no matter how often I've tried them, or what the flavor is, they always taste like styrofoam to me.

"I like to eat my girl Scout Cookies. I like to eat them all night long."

      Sorry, channeled the Nuge there.

Seriously, I'm a fan of whole/multi grain tortilla chips and salsa as a snack. You get your fruits and veggies and grains in that.

        Popcorn.

Seriously, its much healthier than you might think. Make it yourself at home in a pot/bowl, go light on the oil and salt...and its a terrific snack. Much, MUCH more superior to the crud that comes in microwave bags. In fact, if you manage to get a hold of some Flavacol and use that on it...you'll never buy another box of microwave popcorn again.

I was going to suggest berries, but you nixed the fruit idea. Maybe look up a recipe for cinnamin roasted almonds?

Sweet seasoned nuts sounds good, you can also make your own granola bars [lots of recipes online] in such a manner that they are not loaded with high fructose corn syrup - there is a variant that you bake up the granola and glue it together with stuff like peanut or other nut butters and let them live in your freezer [blop the mix out by the tablespoonsful onto wax paper on a cookie sheet, freeze and pop off the paper and store in a zippy bag]

i second the popcorn. I have a microwave popcorn maker that works wonders or 1/3 cup of popcorn in a brown paper bag, fold the top and microwave for about 2-3 minutes or until the popping stops.

By the way, I have no particular issue with HFCS. As I mentioned. I'm looking for healthiER snacks, not necessarily health food snacks. Granola's a good idea. Nuts are too...but I'm not a huge fan of them. Lol!

I like to eat sugar bomb cereals for dessert. Even the worst ones have some redeeming qualities. A small bowl of Lucky Charms or Captain Crunch generally satisfies my sweet tooth. If you don't like the sweet stuff, then maybe something like Crispix or Chex would make a decent snack.

Hubby and I are doing low-carb diets. The first thing we go for as a snack is always beef sticks and/or cheese sticks. Always less than 1g of carbs per serving.

I'm also going to chime in on the popcorn. Good snack, easy to make, and healthy in many ways.

Also going to chime in on nuts as a snack. Mixed nuts is a healthy, low-carb snack. I've also seen chocolate almonds and toffee almonds that use a light, powdery coating that's much lower carbs than the full-blown version and still give you the flavor of chocolate or toffee. (Also, almonds are good for lowering your cholesterol, if that's an issue.)

My mom likes snacking on Plantain chips whenever she get's those munchie feelings. They taste almost like potato chips and are SO much better for you.

I'm not sure how you define sweets. I know some people who mean cake, cookie, chocolate bars. But like my older brother doesn't like anything sweet for the most part so that leaves out a bunch. Anyway healthy snacks:
                        • Nachos (plates size dependent on hunger level)
                        • Trail Mix (nuts, m&ms, raisins, whatever you like) Just fill a container with all the ingredients then pour out however much you want. The flavours balance each other out
                        • Wheat Thins/Tricuits. Either on their own, or with something on top. Like a slice of cheese, or some salsa or something.
                        • Pudding Cups
                        • Smoothies are great snacks
                        • Mini Pizzas. I advice to use English muffins or tea buiscuits
                        • Low Salt pretzels

All the other things I could think of were already said. Though I do have some good Energy Ball recipes if you want. It's like trail mix in a the size and shape of a doughnut hole.

For a...healthier snack I tend to grab a mozzarella cheese stick or a sugar free jello. Along with people suggesting popcorn, I'll throw in kettlecorn as one since it's a salty sweet snack.

Greek yogurt? It's sweeter and creamier than regular yogurt. You can get it with or without fruit in it. My favorite is Chobani (yes I know about the mold issue some people had, but I buy the stuff from their NY plant, which had no problems) or Dannon's Oikos, which comes in delish flavors like key lime, orange cream, apple pie, banana cream, coconut vanilla, cafe latte, plus a bunch of fruit flavors. They're fat free and have lots of protein. If you think you don't like yogurt, try the Greek kind. I used to HATE yogurt, until this stuff came out.

I also second the popcorn suggestion.

How about graham crackers, plain or with cinnamon?

Peanut butter? Pretzels? Peanut butter ON pretzels?
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

Tortilla chips, if you can find a low-salt version, and some salsa always hit the spot for me.
