  • Help! I can't stop!

    ....reading Terry Pratchett.

I'd already read the first few books -- I wanted to do them in order.

I'd had Sourcery sitting in my Kindle for a while. The opening looked horribly depressing. But one day I was bored and read it and I HAD TO HAVE MORE.

So I kept going. Wyrd Sisters, which I just finished recently, has to be my favorite so far.

I find it so amusing because I keep telling people "these books are older than I am." Sadly I won't be able to say that starting now...

    ...with Pyramids.

I really want to get to Reaper Man. After seeing Hogfather I read the book, and I just love Death as a character.

I believe the first two books (The Colour of Magic / The Light Fantastic) are no longer strictly canon, but they're worth reading *anyway*. Even though various things established in them do not apply to the universe as depicted later, they are still an excellent introduction to it.

Mort is a classic of the series, generally regarded in the older days as his best.

I am more fond of the City books - the ones involving the guards are the best:
          Guards! Guards!
          Men at Arms
          Feet of Clay
          Jingo
          The Fifth Elephant
          Thud
          Snuff
          Night Watch
The Truth [though the Watch is really only a small part of the book I tend to stick it on the Watch's list]

Then I like the stuff with Moist von Lipwig:
          Going Postal
          Making Money
[and a new one I haven't seen many pre-release quootes from yet - Raising Steam]

          And then the Witches:
          Wyrd Sisters
          Witches Abroad
          Masquerade
          Carpe Jugulum
          Equal Rites
          Lords and Ladies

I am not as fond as most about Rincewind and the Wizards, though Eric is fun especially the take on the Fall of Troy, and Death is interesting but again not my favorite books.

Pratchett does have some non-Discworld stuff - I actually just finished reading Strata [meh in my opinion] and Good Omens is on the list for when I hit it [I am working through my ebooks on my phone in alphabetical order of unread stuff]
EVE Online: 99% of the time you sit around waiting for something to happen, but that 1% of action is what hooks people like crack, you don't get interviewed by the BBC for a WoW raid.

I always do the re-reads by "theme" but am a little torn as to recommending that or publication to first timers.

Here's a link to one of the many guides. (And lspace is a great site for many other things pratchetty as well.)

Updated the first post to account for my having read the first few books.

I loved Wyrd Sisters. Knowing some wiccans/witches myself, I thought it was a great take on them -- it treated them with a nice degree of respect.

Guards! Guards! is next -- I'll have this one done VERY, VERY soon.

I remember reading Sourcery, I read it in one day, and felt like I had whiplash. Given that he does a lot in few pages, it has that effect on me.

(Boy do I write all over the place...)

I've got every book he's written. He's been my favourite writer since I was about ten.
I think my favourite book of his is Soul Music, no real reason why but it just really works well for me.

Good idea, considering that threads on this board are like houses with teenage residents: they get T.P.'d frequently.

Dr. Horace Worblehat does not approve of it.

One of my other favorite characters.

                            You missed the gold.

                            And the gold.

They were between gold gold and gold gold gold gold.

Love, love, love Pratchett. Wyrd Sisters is one of my faves. And "Witches Abroad". There's a scene in a tunnel that will absolutely kill you.

In my opinion Granny Weatherwax is his best character. Closely followed by Nanny Ogg, and the Librarian.

I cannot stand Rincewind. He's the only Pratchett character I despise. If I knew someone like Rincewind I would drop kick him into the lake in 3 seconds flat. With an anchor tied around his neck.

But, to each his own. Pratchett is the best.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
