We were out to dinner tonight with two other couples. Each couple was paying their own way. One couple, both of them are US military vets and the husband is currently an occupational therapist at the local VA hospital. When our server brought the rest of us our checks, he turned to the veterans and said, "Sir and madam, I'm sorry, but your check has been taken care of." They were stunned and looked at the rest of us, thinking one of us were paying for it, but we all shrugged and shook our heads and the waiter didn't respond when the husband asked who was paying.
We ended up staying for a little while after all of our checks were taken care of and after about 30 minutes, the table next to us got up and left. Shortly after, the waiter returned and informed the vets that one of the gentlemen at that table had recognized the husband from the VA hospital and wanted to pay for his and his wife's meal, anonymously, so had asked the server to wait until his family had departed before telling us.
My friends were really touched and humbled. It made the rest of us feel really good too. I've heard of stories like this happening, there are a few on Not Always Right/Working, but had never seen it happen firsthand. It's good to know stuff like this actually still happens.
