  • Game Idea: The "Not what you think it is" game

A proposal for a game, if you guys would like to try it...

    - Describe, preferably in vague terms, an item, or series, or person, or whatever, that has many elements in common with another such entity that is reasonably well-known

    - Mention at the end that what you're describing is "NOT <really well-known thing>"

    - Ideally, the "NOT" one is something/someone well-known, and incredibly easy to guess from the descriptions, while the actual answer is, perhaps, slightly less so (it's fine if it's just as popular). Looking for deceptively simple answers here, not absurdly obscure ones.

    - You don't have to propose an answer (or get it right) to post your own quandary.

    - It's OK for guessers to ask questions in a 20 Questions style, tho the asker doesn't have to reply

As an example, and to start us off, I offer this one:

    - Began as a comic
    - Branched out into a VERY long-running animated form, and a less-well-received live-action form
    - Video games have come out that were based on the franchise
    - Some characters have an unhealthy obsession with food; a number of characters are even named after food
    - Main character is a tough dude, not too bright, who tends to get into fights a lot. Some by choice, some by necessity.
    - When the shit hits the fan, he is able to draw upon some form of applied phlebotinum (read: complete bullshit) that makes him vastly stronger and usually allows for an easy win. Not always.
    - He has a rival who is incredibly strong in his own right, with whom he often fights, and who sometimes has trouble deciding whether he's a good guy or a bad guy.
    - The characters will sometimes go on long voyages in search of legendary treasures.

Name the series. It is NOT DragonBall (nor DBZ/GT/Kai, etc).

      Is it Ranma 1/2?

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

Em my automatic guess is Popeye, but I know very little about it other than he uses spinach to get stronger and is galpal is Olive Oyl (Oil? Man I don't even know). Fits some of the clues though.

        edited to add: Bananaman?

PandaHat (and AC) got it right. ^_^

Kazim -- Not that far off. As they said, it's Popeye the Sailor Man -- who did, on occasion, go off in search of treasure.

It started as a newspaper comic in 1933, eventually became an animated show, and, later, a live-action movie (with Robin Williams in the title role, and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl) that has had....mixed reviews (hey, I happened to like it -- so bad it's good). He's been in a bunch of games, including a 2007 remake/expansion of the original arcade game. "Food" names included Olive Oyl, Ham Gravy (her original boyfriend), and Swee'Pea (Sweet Pea) (the baby). Bluto is often a bad guy, but, especially in the cartoon version, he is sometimes on Popeye's side.

I wanted to mention fried chicken or hamburgers (as in Wimpy's catchphrase, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today"), but that would have made it TOO easy ^_^

Post your puzzles, everyone! You don't have to wait for another to be answered.
