  • My turn for good thoughts, if you could...

This Tuesday I go into the hospital to have my left kidney removed. The reason is three separate tumors; one at the bottom and two at the top. They're completely contained, and so far there's no sign of any spread. Take the kidney, spend a couple nights in the hospital, and I should be good.

I'm getting nervous about the whole thing (it is fairly major surgery, after all), even though I know everything should be fine. My bigger concern is that this is the same situation and surgery my father had three years ago, except on the right kidney.

Both of our doctors are in communication with each other and are going to check to see if there's a hereditary connection between both incidents. I hope not, because I know how stubborn my uncles and cousins can be. Even with evidence, they're going to be hard pressed to convince to get checked...

    Good luck!

I had mine (right) taken out about 17 years ago when I was 19 and afterwards I was better then I'd ever been before due to it being a seat of infections (It was only working at 12%).

Do what the doctors tell you and take it easy. I wasn't allowed to lift anything heavy for 6 weeks and my family didn't let me lift so much as a heavy shopping bag. I have a great scar on my side which I'll show to anyone though I hope yours does what my doctor told my dad it should do and heal into a nice white line (mine went keltoid(sp?)).

I may have freaked the nurses out by not using my morphine pump and practically bouncing off the wall after major surgery...

Hope it turns out for the best for your family.

Sending you good wishes for a swift recovery. Take my advice and stock up on all those movies you've been wanting to watch but never had time ... that's how I got back into the original Star Wars trilogy!

That was the plan. Already got Netflix streaming for just that reason. That, and lots of reading to catch up on. :-)

My mother had the exact same surgery (just one tumor, but also contained) and was 63 when she had it.

She is now 73, doing amazingly well, other kidney is still 100 percent, and she came through the surgery with flying colours.

                          You'll do awesome!
