Growing up, Dad was always the breadwinner and Mom was stay-at-home, cooking and cleaning and sewing and all those "traditional" roles. Will do once they're all in.Yes,I have given some names that have different spellings on them.When I did the original one,there was a misprint and one name appeared twice-didn't stop some of them still putting it as male in one column and female in the other..
Many thanks for all the pics that have come in-it's a lot easier to get the girls into boys clothes than vice versa it seems.Although if you are able to get your DS into his sister's cheer kit or school uniform* it would be muchly appreciated...

Gender bending- I am female, biological and psychological. From 1998 til 2001 I drove an 18 wheeler cross country, driving solo. At the time (and to a lesser extent, still), female drivers were rare birds indeed, and almost all of them were in married teams.

As a kid, I always wanted building toys; Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Legos, and so on. My parents insisted on sticking to gender typing on toys and clothes.

Strange how just the slight change of one letter can turn it from a male to a female name,even if it's from Jodi to Jody or Toni to Tony.
And amazing how many names are firmly seen as being either male or female,even though there are several famous people of the opposite gender with that name such as Viv Richards,Holly Johnson,Rowan Atkinson,Jody Scheckter,Lynn Davies,Kerry Packer,Drew Alison Carey and Richard Tiffany Gere.

Having grown up in New Zealand,it seemed to be very gender-neutral-we had a female Dale and a male Kerry as neighbours,and many new American names-Madison,Brooke,Morgan all tend to be unisex.Irish names are like that too-even with girly names such as Erin or Tara are more used for men.And of course it depends on the language-a Jan or Jean may be female in English,but turn male in French or Dutch

I've never known a Phillipa or Philomena in person. Those are book names for me...and they always use full name.

Interesting you should ask that. It actually came to mind this morning while I was waking up. I realized that Phil was the only name unanimously declared male by the respondants here and came up with the same two female names, neither of which I've ever encountered in the wild.

I feel like Holly Johnson is an exception that proves the rule. I would require many more male examples to ever think it either.

I know Philippa once, people called her Pip, Pipa, or Pippy. never phil. never met a Philomenas
