True, but I was trying to think of things someone with very little cooking ability, as the OP described themselves, could do to cut corners.

      Pavlova.

Use glass or steel bowl and electric beaters*. Beat the heck out of the eggwhites till they're stiff. Gradually add in 1 1/2 cups caster sugar (for 6 eggwhites), keep beating till the sugar is dissolved. Fold in 1 tablespoon cornflour and a teaspoon of cream of tartar.

Pour mixture onto a cookie tray, mounded up, around dinner plate size. Bake at 150C (? around 300F) for 1.5 hours.

Turn oven off when done - leave pav in the oven with the door open to cool.

Top with whipped cream and seasonal fruit, or strawberries and grated chocolate.

      * Plastic builds up a slight greasy layer - any oil will stop the eggwhites from getting stiff (gee that sounds naughty!) Mixer and bowl need to be scrupulously clean.

The creme brulee worked well - unfortunately I over did them a smidgen in the oven (still soft, but without that characteristic wobble in the middle), they do taste amazing though & well worth the time/effort.

        Now for the meringues

ETA, if anyone wants a truly idiot proof recipe for creme brulee then it can be found here :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/or...mebrulee_81524
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.
