  • Earthquake!

Mother Nature rudely awakened me shaking me, then when that didn't work she made a loud BOOM. There were a few minutes of "WTF was THAT?!"
Then I realized it was an Earthquake. I also realized it was over, so I went back to sleep.

On a funny note the news anchors are calling it "The Shamrock Shake."

    Welcome to Los Angeles!

I still remember the Sylmar quake in 1971, my first; I was 4. 30 miles away it shook me awake and I still remember the dull dong-thud of a butter cookie tin falling from a top shelf. My Grandparents were near the epicenter and their house was literally falling apart around them.

Now you have your own earthquake story.

It just made my pictures tap the walls.
I would slept through the Northridge Quake
If my roommates at the time hadn't banged on
My door yelling my name. I woke up to all my books falling off
      The shelves.

There've been multiple small earthquakes around Melbourne the last 5-10 years. Haven't felt a single one?!(have I been sleeping?) Has lead to sites like this popping up.

I've felt the ground shake numerous times in Helsinki. Invariably, though, it's been due to tunnelling operations - the ground is ancient and geologically stable granite, so they have to blast it with dynamite.

Slept through an earthquake when I was a kid visiting my aunt in California. Woke up that morning and my aunt asked me what I thought of the earthquake. "What earthquake?"

Two in Afghanistan. First one I was up on my laptop during the night when everything became blurry. I wasn't sure what happened but the next day someone mentioned it was an earthquake. I think it was a 5.0 Second one I was up in the lab working when all the equipment started shaking. 5.5 for that one.

Never felt like a big deal.

I remember the room shaking when I slept. It was a little shaking, nothing more.

In case anyone missed it, here's a video of the KTLA newscasters freaking out when the quake happens.

We've had them here, actually. Turns out this area sits on a large fault line. Yippee. First time, we had a parakeet who freaked out in the middle of the night (the cats slept through it). We found out that was the time the quake happened; it was a small one.

The next time, I was home sick from work and my sister and I were listening to a guy on the radio talk about - get this - what would you save in the event of a disaster? There was a loud rumble and a distinct shaking. Even though it was nothing compared to a California quake, I hated it (the cats slept through it).

There've been a couple other ones, very mild. The cats sleep through all of them

Mooncat, your cats are I grew up in So cal, so I'm very familiar with quakes. I miss them, actually. They're much more fun than tornadoes.

I miss them too. And remember living in California now, the earthquake has not officially occurred until you have called at least 5 people to discuss it.

When we had a Richter 4.7 here in Copenhagen, my cats panicked. The only reason why I woke up, was that both cats tried to hide under me .

I did the same thing! Visited a great-aunt in Carmel when I was young, slept through a minor earthquake (knocked a few things off the shelves, that's about it.) Mind you, I was sleeping in the converted garage, so the concrete foundation may have dulled the impact a bit.

Heh, my mom slept through them too. She also slept through the infamous propane explosion (I wrote about that last Dec.) which occurred 5 miles away but sounded like a freakin' bomb going off. That woman slept through all kinds of crazy stuff
