sad fact i just realized my entire association with Australia is mi2, tomorrow when the war began and the book Tongues of Serpents. it just does not appear of my radar... but New Zealand does!!!

Not to derail the thread too much, but the author of Tomorrow When The War Began runs a school in Melbourne called Candlebark. They run a very no-nonsense approach and encourage the kids to get dirty and out into nature, to cook meals and to even start fires and use chainsaws! (the latter is done with parental knowledge and supervision of course!)

The school goes up to year 10 over there and has around 130 kids (they can have a maximum of up to 200). They also have 1100 acres of property in which the kids can roam. Fees are also quite affordable when you compare them to other schools (they charge around 10k per year from k-10, but that amount includes camps and stationery. Most other schools that charge around the 10k mark add on the camps, stationery and other things).

Ah, that's one I forgot. I don't get hangovers, no matter how drunk I get. I'm the envy of all my friends. (Of course with my weird work schedule and paper route, I seldom have time to get drunk, so I have the power but am rarely able to take advantage of it...)

This one will make sense to the Aussies:

I never did the schoolies thing and I didn't want to.

I've never done schoolies week either.

But then, I grew up in Brisbane, and Schoolies was almost always done on the Gold Coast if you happened to be a Brisbanite. My Nan lived on the Gold Coast, within walking distance of Surfers Paradise, and so I was V.E.R.Y. familiar with schoolies week.

It did not entice me.


For non-Aussies:
Brisbane is the capital city of the state of Queensland. It's in a bay (almost all our capital cities are in bays/natural harbours, actually). Just under two hours' drive south of Brisbane is the Gold Coast, which has theme parks, surf beaches, quiet beaches, and the sort of beach where you can walk among the rocks and explore rock pools.
Surfers Paradise has become the commercial heart of the Gold Coast, with a high proportion of the hotels and timeshares, pubs, clubs, tourist shops, tourist traps, and so on.

If you're an American coming to Australia to see what Australia is like, skip the Gold Coast. It's just the tourist trap parts of Florida, with a different accent.

It was different when I was a kid. I've watched (with sorrow) as it changed.

I'm amused by people who say they don't get hangovers. I'm especially amused when they say that to me when they're out drinking with me, as I view that as a personal mission. And rarely have I failed to change their status as someone who doesn't get hangovers.....
