  • The parade of freaks is back....

Yes it's the yearly monstrosity that is Eurovision. Will the Russians sabotage the Ukraine? Will it be the bearded lady, the song about the missing moustache or the Icelandics with the charming pastel 1980s style suits...

Come on Molly, the UK wants to do well again...

I don't watch it at all, though I have had the possibility to see it from the outside this year ( and make a little money on it).

I've never had the opportunity to watch it . . . not sure if there are any channels that would broadcast it to the US.

It's up on YouTube for my fellow non-Europeans who want to watch. A small handful of the acts are good, the rest are various shades of sad to scary.

It's described as a song contest.Musical ability does not feature as the major part of determining the winner it seems...

I, of course being an utterly unashamed Eurovision fan, watched it from start to finish in our usual tradition of hosting a party.

It was actually better than it had been in years previous! The songs were better - last year's was kinda dull. I am so jealous of Conchita Wurst's ability to pull off that dress! Her song sounded like a Bond theme, and on twitter the Bond- and beard-related puns flew thick and fast: Octobeard, Beardfall, You Only Shave Twice...

I actually voted for Sweden this year as I liked the song better, though. Over half the songs had flishyflash warnings which meant I was wearing a cushion over my head for half the night. They were also mostly the most camp, acid-trippy WTF things each country could pull off all aimed at telling Russia where to stick it - that said Russia's song was very good and I did feel for those poor girls bearing the brunt of all those boos. I liked the stage acts, though the hamster wheel and the ballerina on rollerskates were my favourites.

Voting was interesting - not so much political voting, I think due to half the votes coming from professional juries - Norton came out with some surprised remarks for many of them. We got 40 points, better than last year but not as good as 2009 where we came fifth. We need more current artists to sing, not noobs or hasbeens!

All in all a success!! I'm listening to the CD now as I wrangle with mapping rural Scotland. I got several pages of quotes from this year too. I didn't blow up the oven with my Eurovision party baking marathon, and I didn't end up in hospital the day afterwards ^^ 120million people can't be wrong!

I really loved Norway's Alexander Rybak, the 2009 winner; I bought some of his CDs. I love the song 'Fairytale.' He looks like an adorable little Hobbit! I liked that he sang and played the violin.

Oh, I loved the 'Wolves of the Sea' Song from Latvia in 2008!

I loved the "Russian Grannies" song. It's called "Party for Everybody" and they placed second in 2012. Also, according to them, the upbeat song is about....coming home and baking buns before they dance. (So the oven is there for a reason)

According to a friend of mine who plays the violin, his violin is tuned really, really weirdly - like a viola would be.

OMG these guys!! I think I voted for them in the end.

I've been listening to Children of the Universe on repeat for most of the morning. (Our entry for this year) I'm really liking it

Did I ever tell you guys the stories of A. How I twisted my ankle dancing to a particular song and B. How brilliantly the ESC terrified a Yank friend after we persuaded him to watch it?

                      A. How I twisted my ankle dancing to a particular song
Hearken back to the heady days of 2007, when there was another genderfluid crossdresser on Eurovision...this guy in the tinfoil.

YES!!! It's Verka Seduchka and the madness that is Dancing Lasha Tumbai. I was watching the best show in Europe on my tod this year, so as I was still rather an active member of Gaia Online at the time I was on a forum thread of people also watching it. The general response to THIS was 'Holy hell WTF is up with Ukraine?!

That dance was fun to watch. And as I do what I've done since 2003 and bought the album, I put it on for my gaming group to listen to what fun they'd missed the night before, and demonstrated the dancing...slipping on a piece of paper, going arse over tit and making a nice corkscrew on my ankle. It hurt for a few days, but I've been wary about dancing to that madness ever since

                      B. How brilliantly the ESC terrified a Yank friend after we persuaded him to watch it?
Said Yank friend was Tom, who had professed a love of all things Old World especially English. So we got him to put Eurovision on through the satellite link I think is on their website so he could watch it at the same time as us. He was making Facebook comments about how weird but strangely liked it was.

Then they announced that Ireland was going to be next to sing. So, the first part of his comment went, 'Oh, Ireland. A lovely traditional Irish jig. Looking forwards to hearing it'.

I should mention that the year in question was 2012. Can you remember, children, a certain pair of Irish twins who sang for the second time this year?

The rest of the comment went like this...

*thirty seconds later* WHAT. THE. ACTUAL FUCK.

Here is some complimentary rose-and-mint-flavoured for anyone who wants this pair of nutcases out of their heads
