  • Pop Culture Theories 101

My son has recently become obsessed with Star Wars, so our house has been SW all the time the past couple weeks. While we were talking about it one night the husband and I were amazed to discover that ever since the prequels came out, we have both held the same pet theory (well, more of a fantasy, I guess): that Anakin's erratic behavior drove Padme to Obi-Wan for comfort, and when Anakin found out his kids were fathered by Obi-Wan he turned evil.

I'm not sure why my husband came up with that, but on my part I couldn't understand why any woman would want to sleep with whiny, greasy-haired Anakin when Ewan MacGregor's hot ass was right there.

So, what weird pet theories/fantasies do you harbor about your favorite books/movies/tv shows?

You might want to direct your son to Steam, where for only $10 you can get KOTOR

    As for me?

    Joker/Batman.

You can see it. Anyone who's seen The Dark Knight Returns can see it especially. It's just RIGHT THERE. :P

Husband already bought it, like he'll ever have time to play it. And from what I hear it will be 6-7 years before the kid can play it too. He's 5.

So apparently Husband and I aren't the only ones who formulated a weird Star Wars pet theory. There's quite a bit of fanfiction where Obi-wan and Padme hook up. Also there is one story where they all become vampires somehow.

Never try to understand the "how" of fanfic. Therein lies madness.

Too true; ever read any Star Trek (original series) fan stories? Do NOT try to make sense of their physics...

QFT. I also detest most Alternate Universe FF. I mean, really, is the established world not big enough that you can't find something to write without resorting to putting everyone in high school or making them vampires/werewolves/birds/cats/etc? Anywho, my (not all inclusive) list:
            • The Pretender: There's a very popular fan theory that the baby Bridgitte gave birth to in Season 4 is genetically Jarod's/Miss Parker's and that Bridgitte is merely a surrogate in trying to create another pretender. It's not without precedent in universe.
            • The Pixar theory. Google this one, cuz I can't do it justice here. But the basic gist is that all Pixar movies take place in the same universe along the same timeline, and the witch in Brave is a time-traveling Boo from Monsters Inc.
            • Elsa from Frozen and Rapunzel from Tangled are cousins via their mothers. Which spins into a larger theory that Elsa's parents were on their way to Rapunzel's wedding when their boat sank. That boat is the one Ariel explores in The Little Mermaid. Some fans also postulate that Elsa's parents didn't drown, but washed up on an island populated by gorillas with their young son.....

Can't say I buy that Luke and Leia are Obi-Wan's kids, though. Luke is too much like Anakin, both in looks and mannerisms. Also not sure I completely believe Obi-Wan would hook up with Padme if he knew she and Anakin were married. He just doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would do that. What I will agree to, however, is that Ewan McGregor is a fine specimen of a man.

I said it was more of a fantasy anyway. Although, being am exemplary Jedi, Obi-wan has probably never gotten laid like, ever.

I rarely get invested enough in something to formulate pet theories for it (the last time was...The X-Files? Wow). But I do subscribe to a couple fan theories for A Song of Ice and Fire, which I won't detail here because I know some posters watch the show but haven't read the books. I'll just say they involve The Hound and the Third Head of the Dragon.

but you wanna know the signs of a really awesome fanfic writer (and I'm talking about those who write fanfic for tv shows/movies)? If I sit down to read a particular story (right now lately, I've been reading a bunch of Deadliest Catch fics, which if you really want to think about it, isn't really fiction because the guys they write about are real, just the situations are fiction) & I can hear the characters' voice in my head, then they've done good IMHO

and that goes for ANY tv show/movie, not just reality tv..sometimes I kinda wonder if any of those guys have ever stumbled across any of those stories? would they laugh about it or run screaming into the night?

I wouldn't be too sure about that. He wasn't always the exemplary Jedi the movies make him out to be. I think in the Clone Wars cartoon there was a Duchess with whom he had a brief fling, and the new Star Wars: Rebels series has a character that's supposedly his granddaughter. I also wouldn't be shocked if he and Siri (from the Jedi Apprentice series) hooked up from time to time.

But then Star Wars canon is a mess right now with Disney's hostile takeover. I'm still bitter.

Absolutely. Finding that rare gem of a good fanfic author is like finding a pearl in a the sea of muck and dredge that is ff.net. I found a fantastic Pretender writer who honestly writes the characters better than their creators.

Some of them have read the stories. You hear about it from time to time. For the most part, they know it's out there and they generally don't want to know the details. The minds of fangirls (and fanboys) are frightening, dangerous places after all.

                    oh Lord

damn, now that makes me wish they were still doing 'After The Catch' with Mike Rowe instead of The Bait..If they ever bring back ATC I want Mike to do one segment of the show discussing the stories & I'm not just talking about a passing comment/question & that's it.

I was reading a post the other night on the DC FF.net forums & someone had posted a recap of The Captains Tour that the Hillstrands & Sig used to do. At one point during the show, some nutjob approached Sig at the edge of the stage telling him that he had driven 7 hours to the show to read a poem he wrote for Sig. And that's not EVEN the worst of it, apparently security was non existent so this guy took upon himself to hop up ON STAGE, uninvited mind you & Jonathan had to situate himself in between Sig & Poem Boy 'cause who knows what this guy what this guy was capable of ('course Sig ain't no shrinking violet) Sig was yelling at the MC

I was sitting there staring at my screen with my jaw hanging, I mean, I like the guys as much as any other DC fan (except E) but damn, who does something like that??? SMH

There were a couple of Top Gear fanfics I found that were pretty good. My favorite would have to be one that was a sort-of-crossover with Supernatural. The Winchester boys did not put in an appearance, but the "Metallicar" did. (The fic was more about Clarkson, Hammond, and May going to America to buy cars that would be ideal for ghost-hunting, in the vein of one of their overseas specials.)

ya know I'm surprised because I thought FF.net changed their criteria about fics based on real people (like the DC guys, etc) as in I thought they didn't allow that anymore

I may regret doing this, buuuut, I wrote a DC story myself back before we lost Phil Harris (actually I came up with the idea, but a friend of mine wrote it since I'm good in the ideas dept. but not so good in the actual writing dept.) If anyone is curious, go to FF.net & do a story search, the name of the story is "As The Crab Pot Turns"

                        I know so original ain't I

I will warn you, this story was a very adult story so...yeah

*EDIT TO ADD* in the interest of not thread-jacking, if you want to comment on the story PM me 'k thankies

The Top Gear/Supernatural fic isn't on FF.net. When I first saw it, it was hosted elsewhere, but it looks like the author put it up on AO3. Link!

Okay, that's getting nuts. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a good vampire story, and while I'm not a fanfic guy, people can do what they want with it....but why does everything have to become vampire-centric. With all the potential directions they could have gone in, making the Star Wars cast into vampires not only seems uncreative, it comes across as trite and boring. Personally, I'd like to stake the author of that stinking pile of horseshit.

That being said, that very story would be hilarious IF it were done as a Lego movie. Ridiculous and over the too is their forte, and it doesn't get much more ridiculous and over the top than Interview with the Jedi.

I've never seen Deadliest Catch, and have no interest in it. However, one or more of the guys from it were at my bar Saturday. How did I know this? My coworker pointed it out to me. To which I said, since I was busy as hell, "Oh. Okay. Not that I give a shit." Because, well, I didn't give a shit. They seemed like nice enough guys. Drank shitty beer, talked to other customers who recognized them, tipped very well. The guy with the white hair and beard, kind of a Kenny Rogers with tattoos, seemed to be the main guy.

And while I don't know the guy and am merely judging him off our brief interaction, he and his friends did not seem like the types to read fanfic of any type. If they came across it, I'd guess they'd keep going and move on to something that interests them. Sort of the way I'd be if I was channel surfing and came across a show about fashion. Would just keep on clicking right by, and would forget it instantly.

Jester, the man who talking about is 'Wild Bill' former captain of the F/V Kodiak, current captain of the F/V Cape Caution

And you're right, Bill doesn't strike me as the type of guy who reads fanfic, but then again, Bill & his boat weren't on the show until Season 6 & plus, the general opinion of most fans is they don't like him, if you have the inclination, check out an episode or two & you'll see why

actually, now that I'm thinking on it, he asked those of us who follow him on FB for recommendations on bars to hit in Key West & I sent him the name of your place in a private message.

Most of the main guys on the show are very friendly & gracious to their fans & don't mind signing autographs, taking pictures, talking about the show etc, so your interaction with him doesn't surprise me. I mean, since the show started, these guys can't even go GROCERY SHOPPING without being stopped a least a dozen times by folks who recognize them & they are flattered by all the attention by what is, to them, basically just another day at the office with a 90% chance of dying.

No, most of the Deadliest Catch fan fics are mainly centered around :Phil, Jake & Josh Harris (F/V Cornelia Marie) The Hansen brothers, mainly Sig & Edgar (F/V Northwestern) & Andy & Jonathan Hillstrand (F/V Time Bandit)

attachments will tell you who I'm talking about

I'm curious though, you said Bill was the main guy, can you describe what the other guy looked like?
