Also suggestion 3: call the dental insurance company, explain what happened and try to make sure you are still covered. Find out when they need payment by, and how, and get them paid up. If someone stole the 12$ check they were supposed to get, they haven't been paid this month.

Suggestion #1: keep us posted on how this goes down.
Suggestion #2: call the postal inspector. They will rock the thief's world, and not in a good way.

I'm glad the doctoring of the cheque is so obvious - that should make reversing the cheque (relatively) trivial.Quoth Akasa View PostI plan on pressing charges.
I want to do horrible horrible things to this person.
And do press charges. Said person should have horrible, horrible legal things done to them.

Dealing with fraud
I got an email from my bank today telling me of a overdraft of about $150.
I should have a surplus of $150, and I damned well hadn't spent $300 on anything. So I log in to the bank web page and there was a check for over $300 that had hit.
I write *1* check a month. For $12.20 for my dental insurance plan.
The pictures of the check show it OBVIOUSLY doctored. THREE HUNDRED(Yes all caps) is written above Twelve Dollars(Spelled with that type of capitalization), and the 3 is outside of the box. Add to that there's a signature on back, not a company stamp.
So I called the bank. They're pretty sure they'll be giving me my money back, but it will take something like 5 days to investigate this.
I called the company that owns the building, since there's security cameras in the main lobby where the mail box is. I've asked them to go over the footage and find who stole my mail.
I plan on pressing charges.
