Yeah, most of the toll plazas I've seen (and bear in mind, my experience with them is limited to the East Coast between Eastern Pennsylvania and the Outer Banks in North Carolina) don't have gates anymore. There may be booths, but some will be unattended, labeled "Exact Change" and/or "EZ-Pass." And there are some that are EZ-Pass Only. All of them have cameras to snap a picture of your license plate if you go through without your payment registering.

I've seen a few tollbooths with the gate that rises when the toll is paid, but most are "ungated" - and if you go through the EZ-Pass lanes, there isn't even an attendant. There are cameras to catch your license plate, however.

IIRC, here in America, you have to pay the toll on a toll road or bridge at the booth at the entrance. You don't pay, you don't get through. You try to crash the gate, there are cameras and the cops will be all over you like ugly on a cockroach.

So no, you don't get to mail in your payment nor do you get unprofessionally-written letters demanding payment. Letter writer is A Speshul Kind of Stoopid™.

I found this email in my junk folder, from a supposed American company.

Dear customer,

You have not paid for driving on a toll road. This invoice is sent repeatedly,
please service your debt in the shortest possible time.

LOL. I don't live in America and I don't drive a car. XD
