  • Trying to find the name of a book from my childhood

When I was 8 or 9 years old, a neighbor gave me a book for Christmas, and for the life of me I simply cannot remember the name, just a part of the plot. It was something along the lines of a "Cinderella" type story with a mirror that featured prominently - one scene I remember reading had the heroine instructed that she wouldn't get her dinner unless the room/house was spotless, and after cleaning and re-cleaning and the mirror not giving any food, she realizes she herself is filthy and after taking a bath she gets her food.

I THINK that's how it happens, the details are really vague, but I'd love to re-discover what the book was and give it to my niece who is starting to love reading as much as I did at her age. I know this is terribly vague, but on the offhand chance somebody recognizes it, I thought I'd make this post.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

A couple weeks ago, I was having trouble identifying a kids book I'd read back in 5th grade (and never since then). I finally walked into a library and asked the children's librarian. She found it in five minutes.

Posting this somewhere else where there is a wealth of book knowledge; do you know what year it might have been published?

I'm not sure if the area is still active, but the Good Reads website used to have an area where you could post things like this. I posted about an obscure book with even less plot information and several responses came up with the right title in less than an hour.
At the conclusion of an Irish wedding, the priest said "Everybody please hug the person who has made your life worth living. The bartender was nearly crushed to death.

Was it Magic Mirror by Orson Scott Card?

No unfortunately it wasn't. I received the book in 1980.
