What an asshole. That looks like it would be all out-of-pocket at best barely enough to even file an insurance claim.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Yeah, my deductible is $500, so it would cost me that much, at least. One of the scratches (the upper horizontal one) is actually from last year, but it was the exact same circumstances. I live in a condo complex, and my little street has two buildings, one on each side. Normally I park facing my building, but there were no open spots when I got home, so I parked on the other side. Both times I was in roughly the same spot.

Last year was Christmas night; I came out to go to work the next morning and as I was starting to back out, I realized my mirror was folded in. I figured someone just knocked into it walking between the cars; I didn't actually see the scratch until a little later. I figured it was some random assholishness, or possibly an accident (but probably not), but I didn't bother reporting it.

So on Saturday I got home around 9pm, same situation, parked in the same area because that was the only place to go, didn't go out on Sunday, but when I left for work on Monday, my mirror was turned back on the hinge, and I looked at the door and saw two new scratches.

So my guess is someone in that building has decided I'm not supposed to be parked there, and the way to handle it is to cause several hundred dollars worth of damage to my car. (And no, we do not have any kind of assigned parking.)

I sent a message to the complex office; I'm not sure if I should file a police report or not. Either way, I'm not sure it's worth an insurance claim. The big question is, is it cheaper to get it fixed myself, or get charged by Hyundai at the end of my lease. I took it a few months ago for an estimate (when there was just the one scratch), and the guy at the body shop basically said it wasn't worth fixing (unless I decide to buy it and want it to look nice), and Hyundai may not even charge me for it (their website says scratches under two inches don't get charged, so I really don't know what to expect there). My lease isn't up until September.

Put in a dash cam that covers side views? So if it happens again you can go to the police with evidence of who vandalized your car and see about bringing charges and make THEIR (the vandal's) insurance pay to repair it?

I'll certainly not be parking in that area again. If necessary I'll park around the corner in the future.

Yeah, I used to have to deal with this sort of thing; people "claiming" spaces as theirs even when there's no assigned parking.

It's not worth filing a claim. You'll just end up with higher premiums. Take the hit from the leasing agency; it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Do file a report with the police and the manager. See if you can figure out who usually parks there; the manager may be able to do something but the cops will probably call it a civil matter.

Seriously, if you're old enough to own a car, you're old enough to deal with not always getting the spot you want. And if you do feel you have a legitimate claim, then leave a fucking note. I gotta wonder if they've done this to other cars that happened to park there.

Hey, at least you didn't have some stupid idiot driving around without a fucking license, hit your roommate's car, drive off, then have said idiot's boyfriend come over and say, 'oops, sorry -- please don't call the police'.

Guess what we did? Yea, that was not a fun night. Roommate just got her car back yesterday.

I own one of these Lukas Dash Cams with a 64gb chip; records 24/7.

Assuming the asshole walks in front of the car, you will catch them.

In today's world I don't understand why people don't own dash cams anymore. They end a lot of arguements.

A few years ago, my dad and I were in a shopping center, came out of the bookstore to find a very neat, deliberate square carved into the right front fender. We were parked in a legal space in front (parking spaces all along the front of the building), no indication that it was--or was next to--a handicap spot.

It looks like the damage is only to the surface paint, I keep bugging him to see if the dealer can fix it up. Then again, someone may do the same thing again so why bother getting it filled in? Next year I'm thinking of getting him a cheap dashcam.

As I expected: "without being able to identify the vandals, there is nothing the association can do."

I kinda hope she would at least mention it in the next newsletter. Let whoever did it know it's been reported, at least. Then again, if she does, maybe they'll go after my car when it's parked elsewhere, if they're willing to damage it in the first place. So maybe I don't want her to.

As I mentioned in another thread where dashcams were mentioned, some people don't have them for legitimate reasons.

In my case, even though I have not had many issues with accidents or fraudsters, I cannot get a dashcam for my car because I work at a secure government facility. No photographic/video-recording equipment is permitted on the premises. All personal electronic equipment-- including cell phones-- is to be turned off and left in one's vehicle upon entering the gate. (If one does not have a vehicle, it's to be left at the security post.)

A dashcam would stay in the vehicle, would it not?

it's still need to be turned off- which, in practice, means the vehicle is parked for several hours a day with the dashcam turned off ( I presume the secure government facility has car parking, and that you can't record the car park either) meaning the dashcam only heps if you're keyed at home- when, quite frankly, it would be simpler to put up a CCTV camera. Granted, a dashcam might help if you get into an accident- but that is fairly rare, and rarer still are accidents where there is any question about liability.

Not to mention, constantly removing a dashcam can't be good for whatever holds it to the dash (or window)
