  • Body Worn Cameras

I have been reading news reports about having policemen wear body cameras to record their interactions with others. I was wondering what would happen if store clerks started wearing body cameras to record the misdoings of SCs.

We all have read of SCs that totally lie about what happened between them and a clerk. Wouldn't it be nice to have a video record to dispel those lies? Not that some spineless managers and corporate idiots would even bother looking at or believing the videos.

Still, it might give some SCs pause before they act out. Maybe even a fake body camera would do the trick.

First check the recording laws in your state. If you live in a two party consent state, it would be illegal for you to do this.

Even if you do live in a one party consent state, you might win the argument but lose the war . . . as in lose your job.

    Not worth it.

Management would have to approve of their use.

Prolly won't happen, they're too expensive. Police departments spend the money because its cheap when compared to the cost of law suits, insurance will pay the suit, but premiums will go up. For a store, what's the gain?

Only if the clerk wants to pay for it themselves (assuming it is legal and management approves).

There is more cost then just the camera, there is also data storage. Also, the camera would have to be 'discreet', and discreet cameras are more expensive. So we are talking about $500+ dollars (for a good quality one that will survive the day-to-day stresses).

OK, it theory, but in practice, there would be little benefit.

What about having hidden cameras installed throughout the store, aside from the security cameras already there? Like having one installed in each register, for example?

Part of the benefit would be a visible camera, to urge the SC to be more polite. Not that it would work.

Most stores are not interested in finding out who is right. They want happy customers who spend money.

Besides, if they want cameras, they will install them. If you don't have cameras, I am betting there is a reason they don't want them, and it probably isn't the cost.
