  • Gaaaaa! Tipping! I'm so confused!

Let me start out by saying this is not a thread about should we or shouldn't we tip various people, so let's not go there b

Now back to my rant. Other than food service, I have no clue how much I'm supposed to tip people anymore. I know the amounts that I saw my parents tip when I was a kid probably aren't enough anymore, but I don't know how much.

Right now, I'm staying at a nicer hotel and the parking is valet only. I tipped the valet/bellhop (the same people do both jobs) five bucks for bringing my bags to my room, then have been tipping two bucks every time I've retrieved me car today. I haven't been tipping when I come back. I planned on tipping a larger amount when I leave in the morning, how much will depend on if a bellhop gets my bags downstairs.

So I don't know if I've been tipping enough, and how much additional I should leave in the morning. Those of you who have been valets or bell hops, how much should I be leaving? I'm confused.

Per bag tips aren't uncommon for bellhops as well. Like $1 per bag unless you only have one bag.

Also, seems to me it would be more polite to tip the valet a little more if there is snow on the ground or some other sort of uncomfortable weather going on that they have to walk in to get your car for you.

Your tipping sounds perfectly reasonable and about what I would recommend.

Honestly, I work at an upscale place and so many of our guests have no concept of money value. They have accountants and wealth managers to deal with that shit for them, after all. So one guest will hand you $1 for carrying their bags and the next will give you $20. They just take a bill out of their wallet and hand it to you and don't even think about it. So it's hard to say what a "typical" tip is since they're all over the board.

But for "reasonable", I think you're in the right ballpark.
