  • Dog training advice

I have three dogs. My alpha, Emrys, is a chihuahua pug mix. Caoilfhionn is my 6 month old pit bull, and River Song is my skittish chow sharpei mix.

I just got a clicker to start training them with that. Emrys has caught on very quickly, and Caoilfhionn's attention span is short and she's very playful. River Song has me concerned though. She's scared of the clicker, and won't take her treat if she hears it. I'm not sure how to help her, she's very easily scared or spooked, and always takes the lowest rung in her pack. How do I get her to associate the sound of the clicker with something good?

I've actually had this happen before. If you really want to keep using the clicker, get a click-top pen and use that in place of the clicker until your shy dog gets more confident. The pen won't be as loud so hopefully less scary. You can also switch to a marker word like "yes" or "good" for the skittish one. I'd also make sure you're training each dog individually so you can make adjustments for different dogs and always end on a good note.

Good luck. Dog training is a wonderful bonding experience for you and your dog(s). It's amazing to watch the transformation in dogs, especially those who are a little more timid. It's a great way to give a timid dog confidence.

Thanks for that advice, jedimaster! I did some experimenting with her today, and found that I could give her the treat right as I clicked, and it started to be less scary for her. I'm hoping that I can give her some more confidence.

I was gonna suggest that... ^_^

Just out of curiosity... "Caoilfhionn"? Gaelic, I presume? How do you pronounce that? I have a couple of vague ideas in my head, but I'm sure I'd butcher it.

You're right, it is Gaelic, and is pronounced Keelin.

Thanks! The closest guess I could come up with was 'kayl-finn' or 'kayl-fhahn' -- which kinda sounds neat anyway
