  • Heroes of Might and Magic

Ok, don't think this will get many questions/replies, but if anybody has any questions about Heroes of might and magic, I can probably answer them. In fact used to be a moderator of a forum about it before I got sick. So if you are thinking about buying it (or have bought it) and have questions about it.. I will do my best to answer them. (From original to VI)

    Lets start with the basics...

What IS Heroes of Might and Magic?
Heroes of might and magic is a empire and army building turn based strategy game. You build buildings, recruit creatures, then capture resources to do it again.. only bigger. You can capture enemy towns, and most of the time you can then convert it to your type of town. Now in some of the Heroes game you can have an army without a leader and they can still move around, for the most part though you have to have a hero leading your army.

    General army info.
Again differs for some, but for the mass majority you can have 7 types of creatures in your army. There is no limit of how many of those 7 types your hero can lead, but it is wise not to mix and match different factions creatures unless you have the Moral Skill to offset the negative moral for doing so. Undead do not suffer moral problems, or gain moral benefits, but any army with undead in it suffer -2 instead of -1 for moral for any non undead units.

    Benefits and penalties for Moral.
If your army has good moral, there is a chance that units will move twice. If they have negative moral there is a chance they will skip their turn. Moral is a Skill which you can get while leveling up. There are many skills from extra damage, extra defense, to making siege weapons more effective.

I never played any of the Heroes of M&M series, although I did have the precursor King's Bounty. I have played all of the Might & Magics 1-9. including Swords of Xeen. They are my favorite CRPGs. I played the original Might & Magic on an Apple //e computer.

When I was playing M&M 1 back in the dark ages, I called up New World Computing and asked if there was any way to get a list of the monsters in the game. The person on the phone told me to get a file viewing program such as Norton's disk edit and look at the game files. All of the monsters were listed there. So I did, and that is what got me started on hacking computer files. I used to say my favorite game was Norton's disk edit.

If there are Might & Magic RPG fans out there, check out the Might & Magic Tribute game.

I have heard good things about HOMM 3 (albeit this is referring to the original, not the "HD" remake). As for King's Bounty, it's gotten modernised-ish sequels on the past few years, itself.

GOG had the whole series on sale for $17.44 a few weeks back. I bought it, and remembered just how much I did enjoy playing the series. I think I got as far as HOMM3 before I got divorced, so I'm looking forward to finally playing HOMM4 and 5.
        Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
        DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

Warning : HOMM IV is the most contested of the series. Seems people either absolutely loathed it, or absolutely loved it. Some consider it the best in the series, some the worse. HOMM III has more people who think it the best in the series, but it has it's detractors also. Let me know what you think of it after you play it. Oh and HOMM VII is due out soon. Its expensive, but you get in the BETA test and some in game goodies if you order now. ($49.99 on Steam)
