  • Everybody Talks

A local Ford Dealership is using a clip from Neon Trees' "Everybody Talks" for their tv ad. They just use "everybody talks" and "it started with a whisper" then the voice over comes on and says something about how everybody's talking about their new cars, or something. I can't remember because I'm laughing at the absurdity of using a song that criticizes gossip to sell cars.
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

That might be a national ad. I've seen it in my neck of the woods, too.

Nobody really *listens* to songs, it seems Especially advertisers. They just want the catchy lyric or beat.

That sort of thing is why some folks end up with some like U2's "One" being played at their wedding...when it's a song about breaking up. Bono has apparently called people out for this.

I had a cousin who did something similar.

He had a girlfriend, and said that "their" song was "Lips of an Angel".

I DJed a couple of virtual weddings on Second Life. While preparing my song list, I looked on various websites for wedding songs. Some of the suggestions seemed off, but the worst was the Polices' "Roxanne." No less than three sites listed this as a good song for a wedding reception.

Right up there with "I Will Always Love You", same problem, or "Saving All My Love For You", which is the mistress whining about how "her" "man" hasn't kept his promise to leave his family for her.

I keep hearing that commercial too and now I have the song stuck in my head. At least I like it but it's an odd choice for a car commercial.

With Roxanne I could kind of understand if maybe it was a good song to dance to but it's not even that. And the words are pretty clear how Roxanne pays the bills so to speak. I mean I heard it as a kid and even I got the meaning of it.
I would have a nice day, but I have other things to do.

What about "White Wedding"? I really don't think of that as appropriate for a wedding, but I recall it coming up at someone's wedding (A relative? Can't remember where I heard it).
