  • My city smells like a giant weenie roast

    ...And it sucks. A lot.

My nose is watering and my chest is starting to hurt. Not sure if it's psychosomatic but I doubt it. This should be a sunny day with clear blue skies... what's up there isn't clouds, it's smoke and a lot of it. You can see it on the ground. We're supposed to stay inside and try to close our vents. I want to go outside and get Vit D but I can't!

    This blows.

        THE WORLD IS ON FIRE!

No, heh, like Tawny said, it's BC and Washington. Hitting Calgary like a pile of bricks, which is scary as hell if you think about it. Apparently on a scale of 1-10, our air is currently an 11...

Ours in Edmonton isn't quite that bad but still under and air condition advisory and those with breathing conditions are strongly advised to stay indoors. Which doesn't help when 100% of my job takes place outdoors.

A few years ago, there were fires in Russia big enough for the smoke to be noticed in Helsinki, when the wind blew the wrong way.

Oregon was getting it pretty bad, too. The smoke was horrible a few days ago; most folks were coughing and sneezing and there was an ugly, smoky haze hanging in the air. Sunday's sunrise, a neon orange ball in a hazy grey sky, looked rather apocalyptic and creepy.

The air seems to have cleared up somewhat, at least in this area; it's gone from "unhealthy" down to "moderate". Here's a good map for area wildfires.

We've been getting the Oregon/Washington smoke here too.

I visited my BFF in Seattle the end of last month, driving home on I-90 the smokey haze started about two miles west of Moses Lake, WA, was extra thick driving through Moses Lake (as in you could barely see the houses on the northern end of the lake), started to clear about thirty miles east of Moses Lake and wasn't completely clear until I got east of Coeur d'Alene, ID. Saw a grass fire west of Billings, MT and a lot of smoke west of I-90 in the Bighorns of Wyoming.

The front range in Colorado has been very hazy for the last week.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people in danger. I was on pre-evac two summers in a row and know the horrible feeling of having to pack up and go, not knowing if you are going to see your home again.

*raises hand* been there done that. I'm in S. Cali and have been evacuated from the same fire twice. My area was evacuated so me and the two furikids went to my parents 20min away. Then they were evacuated and we ended up at Qualcom. Crazy. Horrible feeling. I have friends up in the northwest and my thoughts and prayers go out to that area.

Sounds bad. The news hasn't had much to say about it around here, but you know, we've got football coming up and that's SO much more important!! /sarcasm.

Just looked at the link out of curiosity. HOLY FUCK! That is a lot of fires and smoke. I had heard it was bad, but didn't realise there were quite so many fires. I'm so glad we have sent a large number of our Aussie fire fighters over to help.

Just remember that you will need to check your air con filters when the smoke finally all clears. It can clog the filters up pretty good.

                            Guh... today is really bad.

Yesterday was good, despite the false readings caused by a spider. :P Hilarious... I knew it wasn't a ten though. Today now... they have it rated at 7-8 but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes higher. Argh, my sinuses! And I just generally feel like crap. Can smell the smoke everywhere... I might have to book off sick, it's driving me insane.

                            *sigh*

Here is a map of all the active fires. It needs to be scrolled out to get the full impact.
