  • This Is Disturbing (Warning Graphic Imagery Implied)

ok, so last night/this morning I was having trouble sleeping so I got online to fool around for a bit.

I decided that seeing's September is almost upon us & the 14th anniversary of 9/11 I would see if I could find memorial wallpaper for the laptop on Google Images.

well I found more than I bargained for, I found that some sick fucks out there had taken pictures of the aftermath of people who were jumping from the towers.

not only that, but they then uploaded them onto the internet!! Now, mind you, I wasn't looking for it, I can take some gore, but that is just....no

I mean, as if the day wasn't hellacious enough, let's make it worse by taking pictures of people falling 50+ floors to their deaths & then put them on the 'net.

forget crossing the line, that just blew the line clear off the planet for me

There's a nearby deli that I walk to every weekend a local artist did a picture of a police officer and a firefighter standing where the twin towers were, so it showed the city with them as the towers. On the bottom it said "These are the real twin towers of New York". I'm sorry you saw those pictures though, some people are just total assholes with no respect or regard for others.

      thanks

yeah, now a picture like you're describing is fine, not a thing wrong with that. heck, I can see the reason why people were grabbing their camcorders/cameras & recording it. Like it or not, 9/11 was a historic event & by recording they ensured that future generations would know what the Twin Towers even were (especially considering that post 9/11, movies & tv shows went in & digitally took the towers out. Why I'll never know SMH)

but taking graphic pictures like that just for the hell of it is just NOT COOL

I remember watching a TV edited version of Home Alone 2...they entirely took out that scene where he's looking up at the two towers and taking in the sights.

I just wondered, why? It was a BEAUTIFUL shot (I always pause to appreciate it) of something that used to be. Why remove it?

yep, & later in that same scene Kevin went up to the observation deck on 2 WTC

I actually sometime ago downloaded Home Alone 2 & Gremlins 2:The New Batch specifically so I could see whether it was the edited versions or not & I did a happy dance when I found they were NOT edited. In fact, the opening shot of Gremlins 2:The New Batch is a circling shot of the towers.

CSI:NY, Spiderman, Friends & probably quite a few more that I missing, if their opening credits included the Towers they were digitally taken out. I also heard that they almost had to change the name of the second LOTR because it was LOTR: Two Towers

I don't know if anyone here remembers the tv series 3rd Watch, but I have recently started watching it & in the first 2 seasons pre-9/11 they left the towers in. But then again, they also did a 9/11 episode in the 3rd season. For anyone who hasn't heard of the series, it follows the officers, firefighters & EMS of the NYPD/FDNY. It ran for 6 seasons from 1999-2005ish before it was cancelled.

I don't know about anyone else, but I never want to get used to the NYC skyline as it is now, I know we now have the Freedom Tower, but it's not the same.

Has anyone here watched the 2 movies that were made about 93? One is called United 93 directed by Paul Greengrass, it was released in the theaters & the other, Flight 93 was an A&E made for tv movie. They both obviously deal with the same events but from different perspectives. They both are on Netflix Streaming as of now & I imagine they'll likely stay until the beginning of Oct.

Pardon my French...but that's pretty fucked up

I mean, I KNEW people who were killed on 9/11. They were having their morning meeting...when one of the planes crashed into their office. All of them, minus the CEO (who was running late that morning) were killed instantly I didn't know those folks very well, but my employer did do a lot of business with them.

I remember 3rd watch, it was a really good show. If I can remember right (not sure if I am or not) the episode in question took place on the 10th of September, it ended in a fade to black to show that no matter what's going on in your life everything can change in an instant.

My best friend had just been moved to another base from Bethesda. She worked at the Pentagon. Her dad worked in tower one but had come home for awhile. My aunt, uncle and cousin lived in Manhattan at the time of the attack. It's hard enough to deal with trauma without erasing the history.

                  .
In reguards to the above---- It was only some dumbass who tried to start an on-line petition against JRR Tolkien (because horror of horrors the middle part of the story was called The Two Towers AND the book was written 50 years before 9/11/2001 a FACT that the petition starter blatantly ignored) AND to get the 2d movie title changed "cause it was an affront to those who died in the attack".

There are a few other movies that come to mind that actually show the towers unedited as far as I know

The original Men in Black is one of them
The US TV show Law and Order: SVU shows them in the opening credits before 9/11/2001 (and maybe in the first few episodes of that season)

                    RM, that's true

Sunshine, was your friend there that day? glad your family made it home ok. I agree, I mean, we're not going to edit the memorial at Pearl Harbour out of Hawaii 5-0 are we? NO, then why should we edit out the towers? it's almost like they want to forget they ever existed. NEVER FORGET I say

Zellie, yeah that episode began on the night of the 10th & then the morning of the 11th, the characters either seeing it on the news or getting phone calls. the episode ended with fire, ems & p.d heading to the scene.

Protege, so sorry to hear that..I think I know what company you are talking about, was their initials CF by any chance?

Yep, CF. I didn't know those employees very well, but we did do a fair number of trades with them. I'd been at my job only 3 years, and what I still find scary...is that 9/11 started off like any other day. I drove to work, had a bagel at my desk, then settled into my morning routine.

Another thing I remember from that day, is one of my coworkers was actually on the phone trying to reach CF about the time the plane hit. He found it odd that the phone suddenly cut out. He got off lucky--some of the stock exchange floor didn't. Seems that CF had a "squawk box" (basically a microphone so traders at the office could listen in to whatever was going on at the exchange) onto the trading floor. That 'box captured everything--an explosion, screams, and then silence

Jesus! so some folks at your office heard the plane come in? I'd be downing Xanax by the handful if that'd been me.

Someone on another forum told a story that sent chills down my spine. He lived in Fla. in 2001 & had been going to the local library to use the computer/internet. He said that for several months leading up to September he saw a group of Middle Eastern guys looking stuff up on the computer next to him, he one day started talking to one of them & was told they were attending FLIGHT SCHOOL

He saw these guys at the library daily for MONTHS, he said after 9/11 they just *poof* were gone

                        coincidence? I don't think so

One of my brothers (AF LtCol) was in *that* section of the Pentagon September 10th...

He was also in Biloxi with his family in the Keesler AFB hospital for Hurricane Katrina...

This is going to sound unpopular...

I want you to consider the covers of Time magazine for the past, oh let's say 40 years. I could really put any number in there and it wouldn't matter. The covers of a considerable number of them had FAR more graphic and offensive content than what you described because they were going for an emotional impact of particular events. In fact, if the quality of the pictures were good enough I could see a few of them on the cover or in an article in the magazine at some point. And Time magazine isn't alone on this. A considerable number of news outlets, both print and video, had similar imagery both while covering the event and also on previous anniversary coverage.

So factoring all of this, I have to ask; Is the issue the pictures themselves which were recording a major event? Or is it that event has a personal impact to you and you don't want to be reminded of he ugliness of it?

Now if we're talking about someone making it a lolcats picture or faking a photo like the supposed "tourist picture of the plane flying into the tower" I would personally be ranting right alongside you because that is in poor taste. But just the photos themselves? No. If you're going to get the full picture of an event you don't remove the ugly parts of it because it offends you. There have been too many people these days who keep saying that distasteful events and situations need to be tackled but severely sterilize what can be brought into the matter. The result is that people can't understand the real impact of it so you get a metered response to it.

The photos were simply capturing an event as it was happening and the internet is a tool for sharing information. There is nothing wrong with either and it would be no different than if you opened a paper next week and saw the same picture in the anniversary coverage. I ask you to consider whether it's really the pictures themselves or the fact that you're personally affected. If it's the latter, I would suggest seeing a psychiatrist then because you may have deeper issues that need to be addressed.
