I haven't decided what I'm going to do this year. Normally I'll make a turkey dinner for Janyn, (my husband) and me but I'm flying out a week later and he doesn't want to deal with all the left overs. I'll probably end up cooking chicken fried steak with all the fixings instead since that's his favorite meal and I want to do something special before I leave.

Make mashed potatoes, keep them warm in an insulated bag, take them with you.Quoth Aragarthiel View PostThat's my question. They've heard enough half-hearted complaints from me about it that I keep thinking maybe this year they'll finally make some, but nope. It never happens.
Or if it's too long a journey to do that, take the fixings with you, and invade the kitchen long enough to do it yourself.Seshat's self-help guide:
1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

There's only four of us, so I'll just be cooking a turkey breast (maybe a drumstick too if I can get one). Also mashed potatoes (a baked one for hubby) and corn. Definitely pumpkin pie and eggnog.
When we were closer to the rest of the family, there'd always be a huge spread with lots of side dishes, but the fridge/freezer in our apartment is much too tiny for too many leftovers.I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

EricKei- Yes, homemade mashed potatoes are the best. My mom used to make them so that as you ate them, you'd find little pockets of butter and it was so delicious. The fact that jellyfish have survived for 650 million years despite not having brains gives hope to many people.

I'll probably be going to my sister's so traditional stuff. For a few years I made pork chops because there's really no rules when it comes to holiday meals. I still had all the other holiday stuff though. Including pie.I would have a nice day, but I have other things to do.

Turkey, mashed potatoes, bread. The usual stuff. I hope that my niece or nephew will get a turkey, like last year. I hope they do, because the one my niece shot last year was so delicious."Life is tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid" Redd Foxx as Al Royal - The Royal Family - Pilot Episode - 1991.

I just talked to my stepmom. We're doing turkey, fake turkey, green beans (probably roasted), stuffing, apple pie, pumpkin custard, wine, and whatever else I can come up with."Is it hot in here to you? It's very warm, isn't it?"--Nero, probably

Turkey breast and a couple of turkey thighs for the dark meat. My one sis is vegetarian so we don't need that much turkey (we get tired of leftover turkey pretty fast). Not sure how we're going to cook it yet, but there will be stuffing, which will include maple sausage, lots of mushrooms, onions, and probably an apple. There will be some other veggies, not sure what; maybe parsnips. I love parsnips!
My other sis wants to make a white potato/sweet potato layered dish. We'll probably have some kind of pie, and maybe wine. When you start at zero, everything's progress.

MoonCat, sounds like your family needs something smaller than a regular turkey. Have you considered one of the turkey rolls (around 5 pounds) sold in the frozen food section? I've seen them by Butterball, but there may be others - available as all white, mix of white and dark, stuffed, and unstuffed.
Alternately, you could get a Tofurkey (vegetarian "turkey" roll), available as the roll alone, or as a complete feast with "drumsticks" (also vegetarian) and other stuff.Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

We haven't heard anything from my relatives in Denver, so I guess we're off the hook for going over there or them coming here.
Also, my mom and I were browsing a magazine and found a bunch of really good-sounding recipes, including one for a stuffing made with croissants, lots of herbs, and mushrooms. *drool*"Things that fail to kill me make me level up." ~ NateWantsToBattle, Training Hard (Counting Stars parody)
