My stepmom texted me that they'd try my fake turkey. I thought Are you sure??

It looks like I'm having two traditional meals this year.

Thursday I'm going to my mom's with Little Ara, and from there we're going to her boyfriend's mom's for traditional dinner. Then Saturday or Sunday we're all going to my in-laws', they had to postpone Thanksgiving since the only kid out of four with the day off is the 15-year-old still in high school.

Okay, I was wrong about the cold cut sandwiches.

I had the festive special from Swiss Chalet twice this year. Once near our Canadian Thanksgiving and once for someone's birthday.

Both times I had chicken, corn, stuffing, cranberry sauce, chalet dipping sauce and a multigrain roll. Only the second time did I have the Lindor truffles seen here.

Hubby and I were anticipating just having a quiet Thanksgiving together. His Mom passed away a month ago, and his Dad well, lets just say that if "Mommy Dearest" had been called "Daddy Dearest," it wouldn't be far from the truth. We planned to avoid being anywhere near him.

So my boss texted me the other day and said "Since your Mom has passed and you two really don't have any family out here, you're going to be spending Thanksgiving with me & my family because you are both a part of it."

            I truly, truly feel blessed.

This will be the first Thanksgiving without my dad--that bastard left in March--so I'm not sure what to expect this year. We're actually having 2 meals this time. One will be at the restaurant up the street on Thanksgiving Day. The second meal, will be at home with the usual trimmings. The reason for two? Well, my mom knows a lot of regulars at the restaurant, and wants to be around friends. Considering the shit my dad's put her through the past few months, I don't blame her at all. So we get the best of both worlds...including leftovers

Our family of 4 will be spending the day at my grandparents' home (literally through the woods and across the creek) with my mother and most of her siblings and their families. It gets pretty crowded but we wouldn't have it any other way.

Grandma always has a turkey and the best ever cornbread dressing (but Mom is cooking it this year-Grandma is nearing 81 y.o), giblet gravy. Grandma will turn out some tasty homemade pumpkin pies (no canned pumpkin unless it is fresh pumpkin that she home canned herself). I'll be preparing green beans w/potatoes, homemade creamed corn (with butter and cream cheese) and a cranberry salad. There will be mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, mac & cheese, rolls, and probably other desserts brought in as well. We'll sit around all day and just enjoy our family as much as we can since most of us all work different schedules and we only get together (all of us) about 4 times a year.

We always leave Grandma and Papa's house feeling so blessed. They truly are the tie that binds. My Papa turned 87 this summer and is one lucky fella to even still be with us. He survived the West Nile virus about 10-12 years ago. He still farms and even trail rides his mare to this day. Grandma still has her garden and uses her summer kitchen to can all the foods she can.

This is what mine was looking like:

I did manage to pick up a work shift though, so I'll probably have the traditional fixings that they serve us at work.

There's only four of us, so I'll just be cooking a turkey breast (maybe a drumstick too if I can get one). Also mashed potatoes (a baked one for hubby) and corn. Definitely pumpkin pie and eggnog.
Change of plans. MIL is visiting friends today, and Hubby and Son don't care for turkey all that much, so I'm making pork chops, baked potatoes and corn. Still having the pumpkin pie.

My plans were cancelled last minute due to lack of gas money, so all I had today was two cups of coffee and a bowl of mini-wheats. We're going grocery shopping tomorrow since we'll finally have the time, though I really didn't want to go out at all on Black Friday. It was either that though or wait until Sunday.

If it's any comfort, grocery stores shouldn't be quite so busy as most folks will be noshing Thanksgiving leftovers, and certainly a lot less busy than retail stores.

If you can go late at night that helps. I need groceries, too. At least the managers are feeding us all weekend.

I had half a pizza thanks to mom's coworker making her work last night [wednesday] and her work making her work Thanksgiving so we are doing it Saturday

My mother, who is blind, prepared for ten people the following menu:

                              Roast turkey
                              Roast ham
                              Mashed potatoes
                              Giblet gravy
                              Cranberry sauce
                              Corn
                              Green beans
                              Broccoli casserole
                              Croissants
                              Cranberry pound cake
                              Fruit salad
                              Egg custard pie
                              Coconut pie
                              Pumpkin pie
                              Apple crisp

...and everything but the croissants was made from scratch. High fives were exchanged when it became apparent she had beaten her previous record for desserts by not just one, but two offerings.

I'm just impressed by the croissants. I'm seeing and can't make those!
