    Okay First World problems here

Knowing that this storm was coming, I stocked up. I had today off from work, already scheduled. So I was ready for the storm. Food? Check. Water? Check. Gas in the car? Check. Candles, etc in case power goes out? Check. I'm all set .... or so I thought.

I don't have a TV, so I spend my free time reading and such. Well, I forgot to get to the library, so I only had one book that I was already halfway finished reading. So that killed an hour. Okay, I thought, I've got this book of crossword puzzles, I'll just do that. Should take me 3 or 4 hours. I did two puzzles and my pen ran out of ink. Scrounge around, can't find another pen OR pencil. What to do what to do??

I got serious on this hunt and found an old lip liner pencil. Yeah I know, but hey the alternative was staring at my belly button until bedtime. So YAY I'm back in business. Did two more puzzles and the dang lip liner pencil broke

As I said, First World problems :-P

    Everyone stay safe out there!

Northern VA also. Got up early today to go visit Mom at the rehab facility before the storm hit. Alas, the nurses out there were trying to get the therapy and such appointments done early as well, so our visit got cut short as Mom got taken off to do her occupational therapy.

Dad and I bunkered down at home, and after dinner, we went out to at least make a start on the 6 or so inches that had already come down, so we wouldn't have the full load to deal with tomorrow.

I felt like Sisyphus pushing that boulder up the hill with how it was coming down while I was digging out my car.

My wife had a job interview so she is here for the weekend (Southeastern New Jersey). Looks about 4-5 inches. Walked the dog and it wasn't so bad. I think the snow would slide right off my car if I brushed it right now. But seeing as it's turned to rain, I'm going to go right ahead and let it melt instead.

6am was a rough time for the electricity. Power flickered and I saw a bright blue flash in the sky which I assume was a transformer. Still have power though in my neighborhood. Few miles away power is out.

My apartment complex is awesome about snow. They've been plowing, snow blowing, and shoveling for hours now.

My southerner dog (She's from NC) didn't seem to give a crap about the snow. We took our usual morning route and she did her business.

We ended up with an official 12" of snow. Under that we have 1/4-1/2" of ice. Our general area is not equipped to deal with more than 2-3" much less all of this mess. Hubby did go to work only to be sent home early. An officer had stopped to help a stranded motorist that insisted on going the same direction as hubby, so hubby used his much bigger vehicle to plow through so the car could follow in his tracks. Within a mile of the house, he stopped to help another vehicle out of a ditch that had slid off. By then, the eldest boy (age 19) had gotten up and was seriously bummed when I told him he wasn't going anywhere, especially in his car. He started to argue with me until I told him, "look kiddo! If I didn't drive in it, you certainly aren't!" But then he busted out that the pigs had no shelter and he needed to get there to finish putting their shelter in (he is helping his buddy at their homeplace and the buddy had not gotten the shelter together yet). So off hubby goes to take him over and help get the shelter in place. (We're both suckers for critters). Son packed a bag is is staying there for a couple of days and the hubster finally made it back home. We've been hunkered down watching movies and crocheting my little heart out. As long as the electricity holds out, we're all good.

The drifts are the worst part, I believe. 12" officially on the ground, but we are seening 2'-3 1/2' drifts. Certainly reminds me of 1978 around here.

They completely pooched it here. "1-3" " and were now in the blizzard and have 10-17". Thankfully the range closed and they called before we left to go in.

Up to at least 20 inches. And it's still coming down. No me gusta.

Ice and more ice here. We had Internet until last but lost power yesterday and still have no power 24 hours later. We're out getting supplies and more gas for the generator to keep heat and tv available in just one room of the house.

I think we have now around 6 inches . . . it's stopped except for a chance of a few snow showers through the aftrnoon - otherwise we're fine.

Snowplows are working on major roadways (saw one working on Wendover just below my house) so I figure my road should be cleared by tomorrow evening (live on a secondary road that connects two major roads and bordered by a side street.)

Can't open the back storm door . . . the snow is several inches high on the deck. One of our neighbors came to borrow our snow shovel to clear off his walkway, as well as the nearby church. He then came back and cleared off our front walkway (some of our neighbors are absolutely AMAZING at times.) I figure my brother will try to tackle the wheelchair ramp tomorrow when the sun comes out and temps are expected to be up around 40.

But I don't think we'll be able to get the car out early Monday morning so I can go to work, so I'll text one of the managers tomorrow and get a ride into work.

But we still have power (been a couple of areas near us that have a few without this morning but should be back on for them by now) and the cable and Internet are both working just fine.

That happened to my grandmother back in '93, though luckily her door opened inward (no storm door).

My sisters and I had slept over at her house on a Thursday night with plans to catch our usual school bus there instead of at our house. We wake up Friday morning to find school canceled because we ended up with at least three feet of snow overnight. Grandma opened the front door and there was a drift pressed against it halfway up the door's height complete with perfect relief of the door's shape. So Grandma called my parents and my sisters and I stayed over another night until plows could get the road and grandpa could shovel a path to his pickup that had a plow attached to take care of their driveway and ours.

Like I said earlier, we're in a southern state (south of the storm's snow/ice mix zone according to Weather.com). We ended up with a light dusting of snow, maybe 1/4 inch at the thickest. It melted everywhere except the shade by 10am this morning, and when my girls went out to play in it around 10:30 they barely scraped up enough from the shade to fill one sand pail. No sign of ice either. I do wonder how many people in town were straight panicking last night, though, but I haven't listened to the news to find out if there were any accidents. I was commiserating with a guy from Virginia at the local game store yesterday while we waited to pick up items. We were honestly told when we were house-hunting here that the city basically just shuts down at even the hint of snow.

I see Philly's getting hit pretty hard. Hell of a storm. Been there, done that, sure I'll have to do it again, but I'm glad I'm not doing it now.

The scene yesterday from my part of the world: Four-wheelers downtown

We got about a foot of snow. Now the wind has picked up and it's roaring outside as I type this. It's 22F outside right now, with a windchill of 3F.

Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Ours is finished. 18.5" is the official, although some snow drifts are higher than that.

This morning, TWC was all frantic about the "state of emergency" in NYC, with ankle-deep snow.

I'm sure people in Minnesota and Wisconsin think that's adorable.
