  • My Husband's Job

My husband works for a company that has him traveling all around the country every week, and sometimes I get to go with him. This week, we drove to Cincinnati, OH, and on the way back, we had to go through West Virginia. I've only been to that state once before, and had never been in the part where we were last night. We drove straight through Charleston, and it was unlike any other capital city I've been in. Not to mention, I think WV is one of the prettiest states I've seen.

Next week, he's flying to Connecticut for two days, then on to Omaha, Nebraska for the rest of the week! I've been to CT, but never to Nebraska, I so wish I could go with on that trip!

Nebraska isn't nearly as pretty as WV. In many ways it is functionally identical to all the other Great Plains states. I grew up in IL (and have visited NE) and found the main difference was that they grew wheat and we grew corn.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.
The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers

My first trip to WV was with a Scout Master from my troup. He had to drive through from Chicago to attend a wedding and wanted someone to help him stay awake. The park were the wedding was held was beautiful. I wish I could remember the name. Years later, my Dad, brothers & I went whitewater rafting on the New River near Fayetteville. Went back there for Bridge Day. a couple of time.

When he is in Omaha, your husband needs to have a Runza.

If it makes you feel better, Kheldarson, I waved as we were passing through Charleston! We actually only stopped in WV, at a little town called Princeton, because my husband wanted to go to the Shoney's there, as we do not have those restaurants in our area, and he'd been there before, and raved about their food.

I love being in Nebraska. Tell your husband to visit Runza and try one. He can also get a frozen Runza and bring it home to you!!

Nebraska is home to many pioneer wagon wheel ruts. They advertise this on their road signs. At least they did when I was through there almost 20 years ago.

Beyond that, IDK. It's an awful lot of flat farming country.

That's awesome! We might move to Princeton one day, depending on whether or not the dealership he visits there offers him a job with the kind of money he is looking for.

Indiana is nothing but corn and cows. At least in Kentucky we have horses. And Hot Browns.

When we were up in Cincinnati, I was tempted to drive to Indiana, just to say I'd been there, but never got the chance to. Of the states I've been to in the south, I've always thought Kentucky and West Virginia were among the prettiest.

You consider WV to be one of the Southern states? To me, Virginia is the "shallow south" (as opposed to Alabama and the Carolinas, which are "Deep South"). WV used to be the Northern counties of VA, so that would make it even less "south". Bit of trivia - the westernmost point in WV is east of the westernmost point in VA.

For me, personally, being from Massachusetts, WV is sort of southern. My husband, who was born and lived in South Carolina for all of his life, has found that he likes it there, and I think he considers it to be southern as well.
