  • I'm my own worst enemy

Can I just vent about my first-world problem for a minute?

So we have this 12-pack of drinking glasses in my store, but I ordered them online because of free shipping and the fact that I wouldn't have to lug them home (bad back and I ride the bus).

A little while ago I got a knock on my door. Now, I'm female and I live alone, so unless I know someone's coming over, I don't like to answer the door. Maybe I watch too many crime dramas. Anyway, when someone I don't know comes to my door unannounced, it's generally not a good thing. I did look out my peephole, but it's frosted over and I don't have a door chain, and I was just out of the shower, so I let the person go away.

I just checked outside to see if there were any kind of note and there was--from UPS. Great. So the delivery person wasted gas and time and was probably irritated because you could see I was home due to all the lights and TV. The package is going to end up across town, a 2-bus trip. So now I have to go get it and lug it home twice as far, probably next week, since today and Sunday were my only days off. I'm thinking of letting it go back to the company or sit there, as it's only a loss of $11. It's just...the principle of the thing. The whole reason for online shopping is my lack of transportation.

And what's with the knocking? Isn't UPS known for the drop-and-run tactic?

I've found it can depend on which UPS driver is working that day, as well as whether or not the company shipping the package said to get a signature (and whether or not the UPS person actually pays attention to that). Our local UPS guy here usually just drops and runs, but I've had a few I had to sign for. At our last place, all UPS packages had to be signed for.

Those UPS guys tend to be in a hurry.

The UPS guy at the swamp will beep his horn multiple times as he pulls up to the dock to drop off our packages each day. If nobody opens the door for him, he leans on the buzzer for about half an hour, and gets real curt and tosses the boxes out of the van for us to pick up after he scans them.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of his.

Is there any way yoiu can call their customer service and explain it, and arrange a second attempt? I'm pretty sure I've had a missed package, and the card they left had that option on there.

I don't know if this option is available in the US or not.

The option was on the paper, but not checkmarked. I think I'll have to call because when I leave work today (my only really early day), I have to go home because I have perishables with me.

Not long ago we had to sign for a $10 book. And yet the delivery guy left a computer monitor on the front porch. He did try to hide it behind the snow shovel, but still.

I also had to sign for a shipment of cloth diapers from China. Actually, I had to go pick it up since I missed the truck. I thought that was kinda funny.

"Signature required" is the senders option.

Usually there is a spot on the drop tag that you can sign to authorize UPS to just leave the package. The drop tag should have also stated when they would attempt the next delivery. They usually make three attempts.

Also, take a look at UPS My Choice. You can sign for the package online.

It's been my experience that there's frequently a number you can call to schedule a redelivery, if you're unable to make it to the office to pick up the package. Though like csquared said they usually make three attempts, not just one.

OK, I checked the website I ordered from and UPS' website. If I don't pick it up in 7 days it will be sent back as undeliverable. Then I will get a refund. The downside is that it can take up to a month, but it's $11 and I didn't even pay shipping, so whatever. I guess I should do ship-to-store if I can from now on.
