There was a girl who used to show up at pagan circles here who went by "Nifer" instead of Jen or Jenny. It was different.
When I was in high school, I was one of three girls with my first name. We could only think of one nickname for it, so one of the other girls decided she'd be Mordecai (no where near our actual given name) to be different.

I got tagged with BOTH of the most common female names for the year I was born- Jennifer Michelle. I detest the name Jenny, and will not answer to it.
So you want to lose the name, even though people don't want you to lose your number?

Reminds me of a classmate in high school. Given name was Matthew, but instead of Matt he went by "Thew."

Did he have well-muscled legs? After all, his nickname was an obsolescent term for "thigh".

I just found out that there's a newbie with my same first name--and similar last name--on the rota; that came to light after I went in on a night off to see if Lead P needed me on SCO (she usually does) and was greeted with "You know were supposed to be here at 4:30 to 7, right?" Errr, no...that's a really strange start time, I never work less than 4 hours and everyone knows to not put me on a register for long periods. Wait, are you sure it's me?

I'm trying to see if I can be referred to (lineup/pages if the other one is also working) by one of my alter egos.

I don't mind my first...or even my middle name. However, if I was going to change anything, I'd dump my last name. Why? Most of you know that my dad walked out on my mom last year. Pardon my French, but his family was (and I'm sure they still are--they've cut ties) pretty fucked up. I've always been closer to my mom's side anyway. I don't know if I'd actually go through with it, since the paperwork required for the regulators (I work for a brokerage and hold a license) is annoying.

I doubt my evil twin would actually be working here. S/he probably has the job I wish I had.

Since it's a thread about name changes I have a question, I was wondering would it be in bad taste or would it be considered disrespectful to not change my last name when I get married?

Some of that is going to depend on what your future husband thinks, and what the culture may be in your area.

My wife considered keeping her last name when we got married, but she didn't like her middle name, so she changed her maiden name to her middle name and took my last name.

She also considered hyphenating, but her hyphenated name would have been one character too long to fit into the computer systems for Drivers Licenses and such where we live.

Some women keep their name, others change to their husband's name, and still others change it to a hyphenated name. I think, on occassion, men also change their name.* It's up to you what you would like to do. If someone doesn't like your decision, their opinion doesn't count anyway.

In the US, what you put on the marriage license is what your married name will be.

A former coworker of mine said that when he got married, his wife did not want to take his name. She was an established professional, and besides, his name was too long and hard to spell (Yes, it did end in "ski"). He thought about it, agreed with her and changed his name to her's.

Yasmine Galenorns one of my favorite authors. Her last name is a name she and her husband came up with and both changed to. When I was married, I hyphenated my last name. My aunt did too and my cousins have the option of using her hyphenated last name or just their fathers name, as their legal name is firstmiddlemomsmaiden-dadslastname.

This is true. Jerry Holkins, aka Tycho of Penny Arcade, changed his name when he got married. He and his wife combined parts of their original surnames to make "Holkins" when they tied the knot.

My husband and I went to a performance back in December that included a children's choir from our state. Looking at the list of choir members, we were both surprised to see our oldest daughter's first and last name. Spelled the same exact way, no less, which is the first time we've seen someone else with that spelling of her name (I thought I'd made it up completely until I met other people with the same pronunciation but different spellings).

I've met plenty of women who kept their maiden names after marriage. Frankly, as long as your husband is fine with you keeping your maiden, then who cares what anyone else thinks? There are all sorts of reasons to keep it, including his name just clashing with yours one way or another.

Mine is apparently legally First Middle Maiden Married, as I discovered when we recently closed on a house and somehow the legal paperwork had all four names instead of just First Middle Married like my SSN card has.
