  • If you could dress how you wanted to...

Anyone else here have that thing where you really want to dress a certain way, but money, professional obligations, or weather or whatever get in your way?

I'm on one of my unhappy days at the moment, because unfortunately for me, I've always adored the neoVictorian Gothic Style of dress. Too bad for me that I like in Australia, where the weather is prohibitively hot, and everything costs too much to import. One of the coats I've been mooning over for years is roughly $310.54, without shipping and handling fees.

So what stops you from dressing in what you love?

Lack of money and too much weight.

Also, I am rather particular about fabric types. I hate the texture of most polyester fabrics; they always feel scratchy, no matter how often I wash the clothes.

Lack of money, and in some ways mom (she can't possibly see what I'd 'need' a cloak for--hard to explain but sometimes coats annoy me).

I'm constantly getting scratched by shelves and other fixtures co-workers can't be bothered to put away properly. I'm constantly barking my shins on pallets and carts. My shoes have scratches from exposed bolts on carts. All it takes is one leaking bottle of bleach or cleaner containing bleach and my shirt and pants are ruined, and I have to pay for replacements. Every time I handle a box its dirt ends up on my clothes. And with no air conditioning in the summer, I sweat like a pig.

My job is too physical and too dirty for me to dress too nicely. So I just look like a raggamuffin and the cashiers and salesfloor people who don't do much and can dress nicer steer clear of me lol.

But I make more hours and more money than they do, so I guess it evens out.

I lean towards Victorian Goth myself, tbh, and I've been using my involvement in the local Steampunk group to make clothing that more or less fits into that genre...especially after discovering that Dreadpunk is a thing. Clothes that can server dual purpose? Heck yes! It helps that I sew and know my fabrics. And I have friends that work at the local fabric store who give me a heads up when certain fabrics are being put onto the discount rack - $5/m or less. I may have picked up some black rayon fake silk for $2/m recently *whistles innocently* I absolutely love the stuff and it doesn't bother my skin either!

I think the one thing I would do it given a chance is get into waist training, but I need to lose some serious weight before I fork out the bucks to start making myself really good corsets to wear all the time.

One of the reasons (not the only one) that I want to get promoted to Sales is that they have a business casual dress code. I wear a uniform for the front desk. I don't mind my blue button up and black pants (blue does look good on me) but I'd like a little more freedom to wear my blouses, skirts, and dresses (all of which fit Business Casual except for a few special pieces that would be saved for evening events or dates with Hubby).

I'd probably want to wear jeans and boots, and/or probably some of my western shirts more.

I wear what I want to work these days. I used to be all business (skirts, blouses, etc.) but after all these years, with no actual written dress code, screw it. I'd rather be comfortable. Pants or jeans, nice T-shirts or other nice tops, maybe a sweater if it's cold. Since I've lost weight I wear clothes that are more fitted (and a push-up bra sometimes - hey at my age I need all the help I can get! ) I keep it professional enough, though - no excess skin showing.

comfy pants, t shirts, bright colors, things that are adorable like a totoro cosplay cloak, funny hats, no bras...

wait i already dress like that....

the only concession i make in my choice of clothing is for my mom when I'm around her, and thats not wearing things that show off my shoulder or tummy. She wants to try and force me into wearing bras or some kind of upper body under garment because other wise 'I look sloppy' to which I informed her I could look into breast binders but I don't care about that and no one has ever complained to me about it and not wearing a bra has seriously decreased my upper back pain so that by the end of the day I no longer feel like i have to strip naked and lay flat on the ground and not move for like 6 hours to be able to walk in the morning the moment I get home.

                  She was not amused.

Dress schmess, I just want my throne of human skulls to sit upon, don't care WHAT I'm wearing.

I'm a jeans and shirt guy, have been, will be, forever.

Always liked Steampunk, and Dreadpunk and Victorian Goth both look really cool. I think I'd like to try some of that out, once I've lost a few pounds.

I'm firmly of the belief that people should be able to wear what they want for the most part outside of work. I have to wear black pants and white uniform shirts for work (security guard) so I wear what I want outside of work. If I were still at the call center job where there isn't much of a dress code (the one on paper isn't enforced either) I'd wear whatever my heart desires, screw what other people think.

My kid still works at said call center and has been talking about wearing dresses and skirts - I encourage them to wear what they want, of course. My kid is gender fluid but tends more towards flowy, frilly things...which I have no issues with. Heck, I'm making them a Ruby Rose (from RWBY) cosplay and have made them other skirts and things. Plus a shopping trip is in the near horizon so that we can figure out what store-bought women's clothing will fit best. The latest thing I found for them - a much-wanted pencil skirt, and damn if they don't look good in it! Who cares what other people think - if you like it, wear it!

I loooove 70's Boho style. I have three beautiful vintage dresses, but it's hard to find vintage 70's stuff that is in good shape and fits well (although maxi dresses are pretty easy). I watch documentaries about cults that were active in the 70's and just stare at the beautiful clothes.

Lack of money. There's a fit and flare, Nic and Zoe dress available RIGHT NOW on Nordstroms. It looks FABULOUS. It costs 320, plus duty and shipping. *emo tear*

The other problem is definitely my weight. If I could fit a 16, even, I'd have so many more choices. 14 would be even better.
