  • Getting a bit creeped out now.

I know I've told the story long ago of my possibly haunted house, however creepy things have started up again recently. It should be noted that my room is currently in the basement of my dad's house.

Wednesday I was putting my work things into the car. I turned around to throw something away and turned back in time to see the gas/oil mix container for our weedeater come flying off the shelf above my car. After cleaning that up and going back inside to wash my hands, when I stepped back out into the garage and reached back to shut the door, I distinctly heard an indistinct whisper followed by a growl.

Thursday morning as I got up to go into work early, as I left my room to go upstairs, I heard what sounded like shuffling coming from behind the curtain that covered the doorway to our laundry and cat area. Of course I assumed it was my furbaby and went to the stairs. When I looked up the stairs I saw my cat sitting there staring down at me, this is strange as she usually waits outside my door to meow at me when I get up. I looked around the corner at the cat area at the other end of the basement, by my room, to see what looks like a shadow of a person that then walks through the curtain. Nothing was found when I went to investigate.

Since this all began my cat has been extremely hesitant to stay downstairs for any length of time and when she is let into my room she will pace around for a few seconds then demand to be let out. She will then book it back upstairs.

I have been hearing what sounds like footsteps walking around upstairs when I am home alone. I will of course sneak upstairs to find out what's going on only to find an empty house. On the rare occasions I do manage to get my furbaby to sleep on my bed she will be sitting there then suddenly will snap around and stare at part of the wall/ceiling or will act like she's listening to/watching something.

This is starting to get a bit creepy, and whilst I'm really not concerned about any ghostie wandering around I thought I'd get everyone elses thoughts on the matter.

That would creep me out as well. I do believe that cats can see things that we can't. And I have heard things that could be described as outside of the ordinary.

I don't have experience with poltergeists or ghosts, though. My first thought would be to do a cleansing and there are many places online you could find info on that. Someone else might have better advice.

I'd get a priest of your chosen denomination to do a cleansing/blessing.

Is there any work being done on the home? They say that even slight renovations can disturb resident spirits, and might bring them out. Not that they'd necessarily harm you. No, they'd be of the "what are you doing to my home" type of things. Also, the presence of a "new" person or animal might arouse their curiosities. They might try to contact the individual--make their presence known. Again, in the "who the hell are you and what are you doing in my space?"

Some of you know that my late grandmother lived in an 1860s farmhouse in southwest Pennsylvania. Built during the Civil War, I'm sure that place had all sorts of creepy entities in it. Creepy as hell at night, but I never felt unsafe there. However, I did get the feeling that I was being watched in certain rooms, and there were always strange noises at night--creaking floorboards upstairs (nobody up there, both Grandma and I would be watching TV downstairs), running water in the upstairs bathroom, etc.

Most of the "feeling watched" seemed to come from Grandpa's office, adjacent to the living room. He would sometimes sit at his desk, and watch TV while paying bills. Along that line, I would occasionally get the sensation of someone putting their hand on my shoulder. That scared the shit out of me the first time it happened. The only thing I can think of, was that my grandfather was trying to tell me that he was still looking over his family.

Oh about the cat--they can see and hear things that we can't. When I lived on the farm, Kitty would occasionally freak out if he was inside. I don't know if anything was trying to pet him, but he'd suddenly want to go outside...and would avoid certain buildings. For example, he didn't always want to be in my workshop, even though it would be freezing outside, and I'd have a fire going. No idea why.

But, the growl is what concerns me. That definitely sounds like an unfriendly entity. I'd get a cleansing done, or at least someone that can figure out what you're dealing with.

Only resident ghost I could think of would be my mother but the only time I've ever seen her was shortly after she died here. I don't think she'd be throwing gas cans around either. No work being done on the house, mom and dad picked out the lot(subdivision) themselves and basically watched it being built from the basement up. Anything unfriendly that wants to pop out is going to get hit in the face with a book. Hardback book, preferably the last Harry Potter. Kitty is currently sleeping peacefully on my bed so hopefully something was just passing through.

The time I saw my mom, or what I believe to have been her, was shortly after she died. I came upstairs as I heard noise, checked the rooms didn't see anything. When I came back out I clearly saw someone walk from the kitchen, through the living room, and into my parents room, which is where my mom died.

Honestly I think things like to show themselves to me. Was visiting my aunt for a week after my mom died to help them out. Slept on the couch in the living room, heard a whisper to my left so I looked over and saw a shadow standing by the fireplace staring at me. It went back into the fireplace when it notice me noticing it. Another thing that happened was I saw my aunt come from her garage through the kitchen and into my cousins bathroom. I know not spooky right? Well right after that my aunt came out of HER bedroom which is on the opposite side of the house from my cousins. That was definitely a wtfwasthat moment.

At some point I need to tell the tale of the haunted mall I work at sometimes. That thing LOVES me and I'm not the only one to have seen him.

Still, friendly spirits do NOT growl at you.

Hubs and I had one of those in our last place, an old double-wide. The spare bedroom was creepy as all get-out when you were in there, and we once heard a large thud on our back porch that honestly, to me, sounded like someone was dragging a body around. This was the middle of the night and it shook the trailer, but there was nothing there. We had a friend who was a paranormal investigator in his spare time come over with one of his buddies, and whatever was in the house seemed to not like being bothered and shoved my husband down the hallway, like if someone walked up to you and just kept going, pushing you with them. I also have a video somewhere of an orb in the hallway, but that's all that we dealt with.

My brother-in-law and his wife actually lived in the same trailer right before us and they had a few more experiences, mostly slammed doors and the smell of hot wings.

I would also suggest a cleansing (if nothing else, a local paranormal group might be able to), though I'd be worried about further angering whatever ir is that's growling at you.

When we first moved here my youngest was 5 and complained someone was waking her up walking around her bedroom. I thought it was the dogs or her imagination until it happened to me. I mentioned to a friend my daughter kept waking me up the previous night because someone was standing next to her bed breathing loud enough to wake her. Friend gave me some blessed sea salt that I sprinkled throughout the bedroom and that seemed to stop things in her room.

In the 16 years we have lived here I have literally lost count of the vcrs, dvd players, phones, computers, tvs, microwaves we have been though. Every major appliance has been replaced after multiple repairs. Thermostat settings change, doors open, shadows move about, stuff gets moved around. We are used to it. The only thing that really bothers me is the occasional awful cigar smell in the hallway.

Just about every place I've lived there have been odd occurrences. I make it clear to any one or thing that is around that as long as they're not malicious I'll allow them to stay. Anything looking to do harm gets unceremoniously shoved off the property. I think there are several friendly non-corporeals that hang around regularly, they probably help keep unpleasant ones away as well.

Salt in general is good for cleansing. So is clean, fresh water, and the smoke from certain herbs. Rosemary is one of the best for this.

There are rituals to cleanse and protect, and to give spirits a spiritual "push" to move on. I am not an expert in these, I've only done one house cleansing which was to my own house before we moved in, and that was a general cleansing.

You might want to check with a local church, if that's more your path, or local pagan groups who may be familiar with this type of thing.

Shortly after we moved into our house I walked though a ghost as I walked down our hallway. All I can say about it is it was a woman. Never experienced her since then.

My wife has had frequent conversations with her father who died in the early 1960s. He makes a certain light flicker and she talks to him, and gets information from him. Eerie, I know, but it happens.

As for your spirits, try talking to them, and listen to their responses, whatever that may be. They may be trying to tell you something. Or you can tell them to stop bothering you and go do something else.

This might sound like crazy advice, but you never know until you try it. And if it works...

I've heard that sage is one of the more common herbs for "smoke cleansing". Do you add parsley, thyme, and a pinch of potent Garfunkel root to the mixture? Cookies for reference.

Just make sure the spirits you're talking to, and listening to, don't have names like Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, John Walker, or Captain Morgan.

I have at least one ghost that I know of. That would be my white kitty, Snow, who died of a heart attack in the kitchen. For several days after she died, I'd see something white running between rooms. Never directly, and never for very long. Then there was the scratching sound that came from "her" corner in my office. If I was in there working, she'd take a nap in the corner. Several minutes were spent kneading the carpeting and getting comfy. After she died, I'd hear the same sounds coming from that corner. While I don't hear it as often, I'm sure she's still here...trying to play with Baxter and Sally. She probably enjoys being chased around the house.

The other ghost that might be here, was the previous elderly homeowner. She actually died in the house. Nothing sinister, just cancer. While she hasn't made herself known, when I found out about her, I apologized. That is...I was sure to tell her that I apologized for the mess and that I'm doing my best to take care of the place. So far, so good.

It's been fairly peaceful since that incident, my cat still acts oddly sometimes however. I think perhaps they're attracted to me. I've seen/heard so many odd things in my life that I've never been able to explain. Whilst driving up to my bank one day, as I was approaching the turn for the atm, I saw a young lady with a ponytail, small red backpack and wearing jeans walkaround the corner first. I turned the corner shortly thereafter and the atm area was deserted. I even got out and checked the other side but there was nothing. This atm is bordered by a large parking lot, an italian restaurant on the other side of an access road, a main street and on the side that has brush there's a very tall chainlink fence. I have never been able to explain where she vanished to in that short of a timeframe.
