  • How would one go about commissioning a flag?

My character in my LARP is getting her own ship and colors. I know what I want the flag to look like, but it is beyond my crafting skills to make. (I think I need a quilter.....) But how would I go about finding someone who can make the actual flag? I know someone who does digital art and can make an image for it, but I want a phys rep, too.

I will have a picture soonish.

The LARP is a dark fantasy/steampunk LARP.

Painted silk banners are ridiculously easy to make. My SCA group just did a workshop, and got four 6-foot by 2-foot banners done in about eight hours.

          YouTube probably has tutorials . . .

I dunno if you want a quilt for a flag. Quilts are at least 2 layers sewn together and don't "flap in the breeze" very well. I can make a wall hanging version of your flag if you just want something to hang on the wall though instead of being up a flagpole.

If you are willing to take a single sided flag, you could talk to a custom t-shirt printer like Big Frog.

ETA: I just Googled "custom flags". There are several on line stores. Even one located in your area.

I'll probably get a custom printed one. I was thinking quilting because I want two colors in the background and a two-color critter in the middle.

The thought process was "making patterns and sewing them together....Quilt!"

With flag making, there are 2 ways to deal with one colour meeting another. The U.S. flag uses both.

Where the pieces of one colour are small, it's common to attach the pieces to both sides of a solid panel of the other colour - the stars on the blue background are done this way. This is why, when the flag is backlit, the stars appear darker than the background - light has to pass through 3 layers of fabric.

For large pieces, they're joined edge-to-edge, so you only have 1 layer of fabric. The stripes and the canton (a.k.a. "upper hoist", in this case the stars-on-blue panel) are done by this method.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.
