I have a Facebook friend bitching about how she needs a workout buddy. I tell her, hey I go to your gym. She asks when do you go? I reply 8-9 am most days and Wednesday evenings 7pm yoga sometimes the Pilates class at 1 on Tuesday Thursday. She scoffs. "I work!" She replies. Okay. So do I. I'm a freelancer so my schedule is flexible. My husband and I are starting our own company so he can do work in his field and we can travel together. I'm blessed to have skills that I can do remotely in addition to being an asset to our customers. Just because I can take a 9 am class doesn't mean I don't work. I may be working at 1 am or at 10 pm or doing our bookkeeping at 6 pm or use my tablet to do billing from a cafe. Just because I can hit a class during they day doesn't mean I don't work. I don't work in an office. Heck I did some marketing for a Colorado company and at 8 pm one night I was trimming bud with the owners because it was what the whole crew was doing that night. She should have tried to propose a work out time that would work for both of us instead of implying I don't work. I don't talk about my work because some of it is confidental.

I work second shift as well. It is hard sometimes to hang out with friends, but we make it work. What I don't get though, are the people (including my own brother!) who think that if you don't work 8-5 M-F, you are working "part-time". WTF??
We have had this discussion many times ... he keeps insisting that I only work part-time. I ask him "Do you shop after work? Do you go out to eat on the weekends?" When he answers yes, I tell him it's because of people like ME that he can do that! He still doesn't get it.
I feel your pain OP, people shouldn't assume that because you work in a different industry or time schedule that you "don't work". That's like telling a stay-at-home parent that they "don't work" .... that's the hardest job in the world that doesn't pay cash!!

I actually prefer to work night shift. Unfortunately, pretty much all of my biz is strictly daytime.

This trend continues for people who are self employed. People are all like "oh, it must be so nice to make your own hours! Work whenever you want!" Yeah, sure. My mom and step-dad own two businesses. You know their hours? All the freaking time. One of my mom's friends annoys the crap out of me because she steadfastly refuses to understand. She suffers from depression, doesn't work, and can't sleep at night. So she calls my mom at like 9:00 PM to ask her to come over. The busiest time at work for my mom is between 6:30-9:00 AM. So she can't go stay at this friend's house until midnight, you know? And the friend sends super emotional guilt trip emails about it and makes my mom feel bad.
Sorry, small rant. I do work part time, but I've been in school and now have my internship. I spend much more than 40 hours a week between all these obligations. Thankfully most of my friends are completely understanding. Some work harder and for more hours than me and have more hobbies and are more social too. I just do not have the energy.
Though truthfully I prefer being by myself more anyway.

I worked 10 PM -6AM for years. The amount of people who thought I could baby-sit their kids, run errands for them or chat on the phone at 10 AM was amazing. "But you're home?" yeah. and I'm sleeping. I started calling people at 3Am to chat because "you're home" and suddenly it sunk into a lot of people
Now I work 8--5 most days, although a few days in there are either earlier or later. People want to hang out half the night and don't understand that I have to get up at 630 in the morning.
I find people to be pretty myopic in general. They only understand their own experiences and don't understand or don't make an effort to understand anything outside of their own experience

My best friend starts work at some crazy hour like 5 am because she CAN. She likes it; it lets her get out at 3:45 PM. But it's full time hours.
I don't get why people don't understand this. It's not whether you work days or evenings; it's the total number of hours you work. If it's 7.5 and up it's full time! When you start at zero, everything's progress.
