  • Is there an instrument you don't like the sound of?

I'm sure everybody has some instrument (or instruments) that they don't like the sound of.

Personally, for me, it's probably the Sitar. There's also another one used, I believe, in some Chinese and Japanese music that is similar in sound that I don't like, either.

Also, probably any horn that sounds like it farts when you play it.

    What about you?

What's that you say? A wind instrument that sounds kinda like farts? And annoying on top of that? The Harper has only to ask...

I give you: the Otamatone. Playing 'Battle on the Big Bridge' from the Final Fantasy series. Really really.

Might you be talking about the shamisen?

There is a saying which goes along the lines of "A gentleman is a man who knows how to play the bagpipes, but chooses not to."

As for instruments I don't care for, I can't say there are any acoustic ones I outright hate (even bagpipes can work in the proper context; same goes for the accordion). However, I'm definitely not a huge fan of early digital synthesizers like the Yamaha DX-7. Early analog synthesizers required patch cables and knob settings in order to effect various sounds, which could be time-consuming if you were looking for a specific type of sound. When digital synthesis technology replaced analog, one of the things it brought was the ability to save presets in memory. Keyboard players often defaulted to a synthesizer's built-in presets, which results in numerous '80s recordings featuring the same brass or electric piano-type sounds. Some might find this a bit petty, given my affinity for old analog keyboards, but I do own a few digital synths, which (even the DX-7) can be made to sound interesting if the time is taken to figure out how to program them.

Harpsichord. I only know this because for a while we had a piano, and it had a cembalo stop pedal, which made the piano sound like a harpsichord. I can't explain it, but it is very off-putting to me. Found this to demonstrate. Bleck! I do like the sound that a piano makes.

Oh, my. I love harpsichords! And lutes! I like old musical instruments.

There aren't really any instruments I don't like, but then I'm sure I haven't heard most of the musical instruments in the world.

I'm on the french horn team as well. My little sister played and it sounded like an elephant was dying every time she practiced. I'm not a fan of trumpets either but that's because they're impossible to play quietly (and my other sister played one as well).

I actually love the sound of reed instruments if they're played properly. Clarinet, sax, oboe, bassoon... I wish I'd had the time to learn to play them! Unfortunately all I got to learn to play was the flute.

My wife has told me she doesn't like the sound of the pedal steel. Like you hear in a lot of more "contemporary" or "older" country music.

She says that a lot of times it sounds like "two cats f**king".

I suppose no one likes bad playing. My brother used to play the violin, and I'd take a nap and hear eeee eeeee eeee. Half asleep, I'd think it was flies and swat around my face! Lol. But I guess I don't really care for the kazoo, it sounds like sneezing or the tuba (too low sounds like moo). :/

I would have said that anything being played by someone who thinks they're a lot better than they actually are would be the top of my list, but then...

I wouldn't have put it quite that way, but yeah, it's too shrill and obnoxious for my liking. And for some reason, brings to my mind the smell of cheap beer and stale cigarettes.

I also can't stand Calliope music. Way too loud and harsh.
