  • Paging vodka drinkers! Please help.

I have to generally avoid a lot of sugar and one of my favorite cocktails is a grasshopper. I've found a recipe for a homemade sugar-free creme de menthe that calls for Everclear. I'd rather use vodka if it's a mild enough flavor, since I was wanting to have some on hand for the occasional bloody mary or herbal tincture anyway.

So, if you think it would work, do you have any brand suggestions? I think I've only ever had potato juice once, in a bloody mary. And it was a sip of someone else's, so I really don't know my stuff.

Problem is, most Vodka is gonna outright taste like vodka. It might be subtle, but the flavor will be there, and you kind of have to find one that you're gonna be alright with tasting.

Avoid Smirnoff if you can, it's basically cheap and nasty with a lingering aftertaste of regret.
Absolut is ok, but personally I'm not fond.
I don't mind Finlandia, seems to be a whole lot less harsh to me.
42 Below is decent, a bit harsh but not unpleasant to the tongue.

This is all personal opinion, and my tastes may not match up well with yours. You may have to have a vodka night to figure out what you like.

There is one called Buffalo Grass that is outstanding. Best I have ever had, a Polish friend gave me a bottle once.

I like that just for the name!

You could try one of the flavored Pinnacle vodkas. Something like Whipped Cream to give it a bit of a sweeter taste...some flavor that will blend in well with the other flavors of the drink you're trying to make.

(Edit: just realized you were looking for sugar-free. Not sure if Pinnacle will fit the bill, and it CERTAINLY won't mix with a Bloody Mary. I like Finlandia just fine...relatively cheap and doesn't taste like kerosene.)

I went shopping but no dice on the brands. I'll keep looking. It seems like a good spirit to have on hand.

Too bad you couldn't find the Bison Grass. I'm not a vodka drinker, but my friend is, and gave me some, and it's damn good.

Another vote for Titos here, though there are a few others that might fit the bill. Russian Standard, Pravada and Bevedere come to mind.

V1 is good. No real aftertaste to it.

I've heard good things about Death's Door (named for Door County), but have never tried it. It's a bit too pricey for me.

The recipe may not work if you use 100 proof vodka rather than the nearly-pure-alcohol Everclear; or you may need to compensate by adding smaller amounts of other liquids.
