  • New Independence Day (No Spoilers)

Just seen the new Independence Day film. Not a bad offering at all, though true to its origins.

Special effects are decent. Jingoistic speeches are there. Nobility in the face of a bunch of invading arseholes are a main feature.

As per the first one, don't think too much about it, don't expect anything deep, and just get on with inhaling your popcorn at the same time as enjoying.

Ya it wasn’t horrible, but it also wasn’t as good as the Original. Several people in it made you ask what their affiliation with the first one was. The ending was slightly anti-climactic with overshadows of been there done that. Had the whole “everyone trying to be a martyr” all throughout it. The ending is very predictable beyond the humans winning. Nice setup for the third one and is it just me or does the new help look like Marvin from HHGG?

I've been debating off and on if I should see it or not, as I've heard mixed reviews of it. Some people loved it, some people said it was a waste of time/money/whatever, and some said variations of the above.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

I drove a woman home from seeing it a few days ago. She said it was a good movie in general and she was glad she saw it in theaters. Me... I'll wait until I can stream it or something.

I saw it with my eldest nephew last week, and the best I can describe it as is 'meh'. Yeah, the space stuff is there, the aliens, etc, from the first movie. However, no Will Smith, and the plot gets kinda boring sometimes. At one point, my nephew had to make sure I was awake. There are people who loved the film, though, so go see it yourselves, rather than judging it by other people's opinions.

I found the movie very meh overall it seemed. I think my main issue for me was the overall lack of iconic destruction.

Minor spoilers of sorts.... (Small text in white; highlight to see)

In the first movie, there was a lot of build up over the landmarks and then we had an orgy of Monument destruction. That was the key elements of the first movie and became what it represented.

This one? Not so much. We got destruction, we even got a bit of landmark destruction... but there was no build up, no anticipation; it was more blink and you'll miss it (and it was in the previews to boot). They basically threw away the iconic scenes of the franchise with barely a passing comment IMO.

It's like a Star Trek movie without using a transporter or tecknobabble; or Star Wars without using the Force and Light sabres. Sure a good story/movie can overcome that... but ID-R wasn't taht good in the end, IMO.

Anyways, it had the potential to be a good movie; but for the most part it just never quite reached it.
