one of my uncles was a thief

When I had my First Communion more than 30 years ago, my mom threw me a party. After the party my mom said one of her brother's stole a bracelet she had left on a shelf.

About 4 months ago I went to a relative's house and there was my thief of an uncle there. I've seen him through out the years and as me, the relative and my uncle was talking, my uncle brought up that he stole stuff when he was younger. I didn't remember what my mom said years ago about him.

This past weekend I went to one of my aunt's house for lunch and a cousin of my mom (and aunt) came for lunch too. I brought up what my uncle said months ago and what my mom told me years ago. My aunt said, "he's not a thief." My aunt wouldn't look me in the eye, so I figured she was lying (my aunts, uncles and my mom has that tell). My mom's cousin told me latter that day, "yes, he is a thief. When he was young he was at my mom's house (which would be my mom's aunt) he stole some emeralds. He tried to blame my brothers."

I have ton of stories about what assholes my mom's siblings are. Though it's probably not the worst family I heard about.

My only uncle has done time for his part in an armed robbery.

In all fairness, I think it was stupidity / naivety that got him mixed up in it, rather than any hardened criminal tendencies, but nonetheless, he was involved and it meant a prison sentence.

Having said that, the connections he made while inside did prove very useful a couple of years later, when my brother needed a bit of unofficial help with a problem he was having.
