  • OK, I Kind of Got the Job...

So last week I interviewed with Company A (sales) and Company B (inbound customer service). I got the offer from B first (I thought) so I said I was interested. I've submitted the online applications for both to get the process started because I wanted to cover all my bases, even though I was really excited about B.

So interview with A went well, but I was unsure of the logistics, having no car. I think I even told him that, and I know when asked about the scheduling should I get the job I answered that I needed time to think about it. That night I sent him a follow-up thank-you email telling him that I was still interested, the things we agreed upon as far as business practices, etc. I distinctly remember stating that whatever his decision regarding hiring me, I was appreciative of the conversation. I did not get a response from him, but one from HR asking to clarify some things on my app. I did that but didn't hear anything about an offer.

The next day I interviewed with B and they really liked me. I saw what I'd be doing and it felt like a perfect fit; it's what I do at work now, but on the phone. The next day HR called and left a voicemail that they'd like to take me on. I kept missing her by phone but I filled out the app under her direction in a text message, knowing I'd talk to her today. Two or 3 times today she mentioned that given the passing of the background check (which is fine unless they consider bad credit a bar to employment) they'd then schedule the drug test. I'm thinking credit history might be important to them because I'd be dealing with people's bills somewhat, whereas I heard directly from my interviewer at A that he doesn't see credit issues as defining of character, just a problem that people run into and need to solve. Also, my friend works there (just found out from other friend that it's actually on that team--didn't know that) and she had a similar credit situation to mine when she was hired, no problem.

Well, Company A thought I for sure wanted the position and is ready to start me very soon. I had to tell HR lady that I wasn't aware they'd made a decision for sure; I hadn't received a phone call or email stating such. I asked that they give me a little room and she called S (the guy who interviewed me) and talked to him. He left a voicemail I haven't responded to.

It's important to note that temporarily the transportation issue has disappeared, as I am borrowing a friend's car for time being. It's also important that with job A there is a sign-on bonus and more pay, which will help me buy a car before I have to give this one back.

So what's my problem? I'm afraid of not making sales goals. I've heard that Company A has a revolving door. I've done customer service and sales only in a retail environment. I point-blank asked the A interviewer what exactly about my retail background caught his attention when hiring for a sales position. He seems to think I have the right skill set. My friend had the same retail background as me and she's been asked if she wants to step up to supervisor. Maybe I can do it. I like the product my team would be selling. I am one of those people who can sell something I think is good. But they're not paying me $29,000 a year to not make goals.

    I HATE MAKING DECISIONS! (help)

On a BG check, bad credit could be an issue if it's REALLY low, as some places might interpret such a thing as an indication that the person is desperate for money, and (in their eyes) more likely to steal.

My score is alright, but my past history is awful--all kinds of judgements and attempts to garnish me (though I've been too poor for them to legally do so). Most of those are credit cards. It's at the point of ridiculous. I chose not to file bankruptcy because it makes them stop collecting but it doesn't make the debt go away. It's my fault and I will always owe. There's no escaping that.

I've worked for several different financial/credit card companies at times when I had absolutely horrible credit. It's not necessarily a deal breaker with those jobs. The thing that would make me concerned is that Job A is sales based, which is pretty stressful, and I know you are looking to move away from job-related stress.

OK, I've passed the credit checks and I'm an emotional wreck. I'm the kind of person who needs time to think things out, like weeks. I cried all day yesterday. I'm leaning toward the Company A but it just kills me that I feel I'm going back on my word with Company B. I am ignoring calls from both because I am unable to deal with this professionally. My friend says to pick the one I'd do well in. That's Company B; I'd do so well I'd get bored. And the atmosphere is a bit too relaxed for me. Also, Company A's sign-on bonus will help me get a car sooner. I just have no idea how well I would do. I am frozen and cannot make this decision.

All I really wanted to do in the first place was take out a loan (admittedly high interest), pay off some of my smaller bills, and work part-time for a while so I could job-hunt. (I usually expect it will take weeks or months to find one.) Or to ride it out until hours increased. At a job I hate. I must be mentally ill.

I want A. Even if I get fired for not making sales goals 6 months down the line, I will have obtained a car paid in full and gotten rid of my smaller debts. I can live on a little over half what they'd pay me, maybe (depends on what the increase does to my health insurance subsidy and how much car insurance is). I do believe I can get by on about $1200 a month. I'd have quite a bit left over after that. Hello, savings!

Thank you. I emailed him tonight letting him know what happened and why I'm waffling (because of other offer.) I reiterated the reasons why--even though I think both companies are great and I think I can fit into either--his company will challenge me more, which will be good for me. The other position would be easy to take because it's comfortable, and comfortable isn't always good. I don't know what he'll say. I think I have an awful conversation with a very sweet HR lady in the future.

On the credit check -- AFAIK, They can get your current rating/number, but nothing else. How you're doing NOW is what matters, and it looks like you made the grade!

I must agree with what was said before -- Having the opportunity to get working, reliable transportation is just too good to pass up. Whichever one you choose, you might wish to consider writing the other a nice "Thank you for the opportunity" type of letter. Keeping your future options open is seldom a bad thing

I've heard nothing regarding the sales job. I emailed him last night and he may be busy, but still, HR could've called or emailed me back by now. I included that fact that I was free to talk after 2:00 and it's now 4:00. Meanwhile HR from the customer service job texted me earlier to get the background check done. I'm giving it one more hour and calling her. I have a feeling I'm going to lose both these opportunities. arrrrrrgh I wish they'd never seen my resume. I could've gotten a simple food job I could walk to and never known what I was missing. I just hate my job now. This morning was a customer service minor disaster, as I had to beg for help in cafe and a few people walked away. I hate my life right now.
