  • To stop a telemarscammer

Does anyone know how to stop these people? I receive 6-8 calls a day, from the same people, all from different numbers (it used to always be the same number, but when I started blocking numbers they would just switch to a different one, it also used to be only once every day or two), always the same thing:
Stage 1) wanting to speak to the business owner (who doesn't take calls from people who don't identify themselves)
Stage 2) refusing to leave any details or information
Stage 3) getting angry when I won't tell them the right time to call to speak to the business owner, or when I tell them he never answers the phone
and in the last month or so
Stage 4) threatening to fuck with my family, arrest me, sue me, burn down my house or beat me to death

It sounds like it's the same three guys over and over, and they have serious anger issues. I've googled the number they were originally calling from and people say they are trying to sell businesses the opportunity to be on the front page of google searches (we have an seo company that does that with relevant searches, even if they were legit we wouldn't want to deal with them).

I can't stop answering my phone, it's a company phone and customers and other unknown numbers call me all the time about actual things to do with our business, nor can I get rid of the number for the same reason. It's gone beyond annoying to the point of making me angry. Bell had no solution other than blocking numbers, which does nothing but take my time because they just call from a different one. Short of ranting, yelling and swearing back at them (which would probably make the angry men happy, since they got a reaction out of me) I have no idea how to deal with this anymore.

Sounds like they're spoofing phone numbers. Is there any way you can contact the phone company and see where the numbers originate? Maybe block that number directly at the phone company, maybe?

I don't know how all that works.

Perhaps tell them that the owner refuses to work with companies that won't leave their information with you, and (obviously much worse) threaten his employees. I don't know if it will work, but it might be worth a try.

Bell is the phone company we are with. They had no solution other than the number blocking.

I'm not sure telling them no will help, I was away twice this summer for a few days and had my number forwarded to a coworker. He's a good guy but hates this kind of thing and I suspect he went off on them. I think that's why the call frequency and aggression have increased so much lately.
(My coworker got the guys who call claiming to be the CRA to scream at him about how he was coming to his house to do ______ to his wife and kids. In less than 3 minutes. It's his gift)

How would this obnoxious caller even know where you, or your co-worker, lives?

It's like the IRS scam where they say that they will send law enforcement to your house to arrest you. One guy on a YouTube video said "Go right ahead. I'll wait." Then he hung up. Or something like that.

They wouldn't, but to go from trying to convince my co-worker he was with the CRA and owed on his taxes, to screaming obscenities about his family in that short a time was impressive.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the CRA? It sounds a lot like the IRS here in the States.

But yeah, not sure there's much you can do. Though I did hear of a guy once who actually tracked down "who" was calling him (i.e. the scammer company) and actually sued them in small claims court -- and won.

If the boss allows it and there are no customers anywhere near, feel free to curse like a sailor. Or simply a nasty hangup -- "Sorry, we don't do business with _____headed, ____ing _____s like you. Ever. Fuck off." *click*

In the US, my normal reaction would be "Use the Do Not Call list" -- But, if they're illegal, that won't stop them, and it doesn't apply to business numbers anyway, for some inexplicable reason. x.x

My parents get the same scam calls, people claiming to be able to get their business first on Google. They haven't gotten threatening, but they are persistent... My mom knows a few of the numbers and just picks the receiver up and drops it. If she answers it and they start their very easy to recognize spiel, she immediately hangs up. It wastes a little time, but not a lot.

If these people are threatening you, try reporting it to the cops? Maybe at least they might have some different advice for you, if nothing else.

If you're at work, then you probably can't do this, but my son wastes as much time as possible by pretending to interested but clueless. He kept a "Windows" scammer on the phone for close to 45 minutes by pretending not to understand the instructions he was being given, and just generally playing dumb. They ended up hanging up on him! Unfortunately for them, they were dumb enough to give him a callback number at the start of the call, and he kept calling them back. They actually had the nerve to get upset and tell him to stop calling them!

Given that they have made threats:

You can use call trace and report the calls to the police:

When you get those calls, and know for sure they are the scammers, just answer as follows: "One moment, please." And then hang up.
