  • Am I being SC here?

Ok, the supermarket where I purchase groceries has a bakery. They make fresh-baked bread and other goodies.

Well, some of the loaves of bread they pre-cut and pre-bag. Others are put out on the shelf.

Well, my wife picked one of the un-cut, un-bagged ones, and asked me to have the bakery lady cut it.

So I asked if I could get it sliced "please". The bakery lady was like, "there's some right there..." (basically, pointing to the pre-cut, pre-bagged ones), but she cut it for us anyway. There's basically a machine that they put the bread into, and it cuts the bread into even slices.

So are we being SC by asking the bakery lady to cut a fresh loaf of bread for us, while there are loaves already cut and bagged?

My wife says the fresh stuff is better, because the other stuff may be put in the bag while it's still warm, and may get condensation on the inside, and affect the texture of the bread. I dunno, but we always get the loaf cut.

    So, what say you?

I wouldn't think that would be sucky? I mean, most grocery stores actually advertise that they will cut bread. Plus, depending on when you're shopping, the pre-sliced bread might have been there for the whole day.

I had a weird experience at a Freddy's superstore. I asked for some bread to be cut (it's from a local bakery, very good!) and the girl behind the counter gave me a "look" and I couldn't figure out why. It turns out that this bakery has a self serve bread slicer! But the girl didn't tell me, and I didn't see the cutter, since the bakery section is huge. So instead of pointing out the cutter, she just came out and did it for me.

NAR is right. Especially about the "it may have been there all day" part.

Also, yeah, condensation can build up inside the bag if it's sealed off too soon (slicing it will let a lot of it out, but if the bread is still warm to the touch, it can get soggy. For this reason, my eyes still bug out a bit when I go to buy a baguette of French bread at stores up here -- back in NOLA, they were ALWAYS left with the end of the bag open. At WM in particular (which, oddly, is not half bad on those things), going first thing in the morning will often yield bread that was bagged and sealed so early that you can see the "steam" inside the bag! O_O No! No! Bad baker! BAD!

Well, we usually go shopping fairly early in the day (we're usually home by 11 AM). But I ask the question in my original post because the lady often times seems annoyed when we ask her to do this. We're not mean or rude about it, she just seems annoyed that we're asking her to cut this bread, when there's already pre-cut, pre-bagged bread right there.

The fact that you're asking 'am I being an SC'? would immediately elevate you about their level. They don't even consider that they're being an SC,or would deny it emphatically.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

Since the precut stuff is done in a way that affects the quality (probably don't have the space to store until it cools/want to avoid complaints of "There's no sliced bread"), it's not sucky to want to get a loaf that's had time to cool sliced so that the bread you're paying for is done right.

Some of the stores I go to have a machine that lets the customers themselves slice the bread (same thing: you put the bread on, stick the bag onto the end for easy gathering-up of the slices, and turn the machine on).

I don't see that it's being an SC to request that a fresh loaf be sliced. Sounds to me as if she was polite about it.

Depending on her tone of voice and attitude, the employee might simply have thought your wife had overlooked the pre-cut and pre-bagged loaves.

Did you attempt to beat the cashier around the head with the unsliced loaf?Or insert it violently into their person? No,then you haven't reached that level of SC yet...
