Operations (road maintenance) or enforcement (weigh stations/truck inspection)? Sometimes the two divisions of the DOT don't coordinate with each other. For example, in New York state, there is a secondary road (bypassing Thruway, which is a toll road) to get to I390, and there are 2 possible ways to get to I390 from it. One gets on at exit 7, the other (which has a few finicky corners) gets on at exit 6. Between exits 6 and 7 are rest areas which the DOT loves to use for truck inspections.
A couple years ago, there was a much-publicized inspection blitz. The week before the blitz, electronic signs appeared at a bridge after the split between the turnoff for the exit 6 routing and exit 7. There was going to be work done on the bridge, creating delays - and the scheduled date was during the inspection blitz. Great idea, operations department - give drivers a legitimate reason (avoiding construction delays) to bypass a location where the enforcement department would probably be doing inspections.Any fool can piss on the floor. It's janitorial so I'll mostly be working at the main office where I live. I'm hoping to get more clerical experience and move into that when they get an opening but right now I'm happy with this.Comment

So its been three months now since I officially started and I love working for the state.
My boss says I'm doing really well and picking up on stuff faster than she thought that I would and has added some administrative work so I can start getting experience.
She said to not get comfortable where I am because her main plan is to get me trained and out of
custodial because she believes I'm going to go far with as hard as I work.
She also says I need to learn to say no and to not be afraid of that word.
This so different from retail and I'm glad that I have a boss that actually has my back and I don't have to worry about getting into trouble or offending anyone as long as I'm polite. Which she knows I am.Comment
