    Nintendo Classic?

    Hi all,

    Wondering if anyone got any stories about the Nintendo Classic release? Was it big lines? How did the stores handle it (i.e. give out wrist bands/coupons for first people in line?). I am curious because here is supposed to be more launches tomorrow.

    My experience was a bit disappointing. I live in a town of around 20,000 people.

    When I first heard about it, I went down to the local GameShop and put my name on the list.

    Well, that's not really a "hold" list, just "We'll call you to remind you..." list. They called to remind me...and told me that the game store only had five of them. The Wal-Mart nearby had sold out, too...

    Anyway, I worked at home on Friday, and had a quick meeting at 9:30. I left my house at about 9:45, and got to the game store right before 10. There were already five people in line, and they got "tickets" to reserve them. Some of them had been there for two hours waiting.

    A co-worker of mine told me he want to his local Wal-Mart this morning at 7AM and was told they sold out shortly after midnight.

    Seems Nintendo is creating an artificial shortage, to jack up demand, or something.

    So now I'm waiting until 2PM Pacific Standard Time for them to go on sale through Amazon...

      This reminds me a lot of the Wii, which was insanely hard to get for a long time.

        My wife told me she saw an article that said most (if not all) places are already sold out.

        I can't even get to the page anymore on Amazon. It came up once, and I clicked the "Add to Cart" button...but it didn't add to my cart...so I tried again, and a couple more times...then I just got a blank white page.

          Your last sentence I think hit the nail right on the head!! As for Walmart...was it a 24 hour Walmart? We used to have that, but haven't for a couple years now. I did try to order one on Best Buy..had it added to the cart and everything and when I went the check out it said that it was sold out.

              I worked at GS during its release. The prior June, they had told us to take 120 pre-orders at our store (by far the busiest store in our district, and in at least 3 states -- as in "900 pre-orders for Madden NFL every year" busy), almost all of which were paid in full right away. The thing came out in December, at which point they sent us...drumroll, please...TWELVE units. All of their subsequent shipments did the same, and each came in without warning. It took us until late MARCH just to fill all of the pre-orders. Once they were filled, they continued with the dozen-at-a-time mystery shipments, so, if you weren't shopping in the store when they came in, you were SOL.

                I had to pick up a car radio mounting kit I'd ordered at Best Buy yesterday; didn't realize the mess I'd waded into until I went in and looked in the direction of the service desk. Resignedly walked over to the end of the line, but a helpful employee noticed me holding my receipt and helped me right away.

                  I'm lucky enough to still own a fair amount of the original hardware. Sure, it can be cranky at times, and the "toaster" NES uses what has to be one of the worst game cartridge slots ever designed, but when it's working, it's quite fun. Even so, I may pick up one of these NES Minis when the craziness dies down. It's something that a lot of collectors thought that Nintendo would never do, particularly after the "famiclone" debacle.

                    Me too. Anyone remember Shadowgate? I had it for the original NES, and spent many an afternoon dying repeatedly. I also bought a bunch of old games when I got my Wii U, since you can save whenever you want, as opposed to the original. I had so much fun playing Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. As a kid I never beat it, I always got stuck, and we didn't have the internet to cheat.

                    It looks like the only game that I'm interested in that isn't available on the Wii U virtual console is Final Fantasy. I still might get the Classic later, after Christmas at least, I'm a sucker for Nintendo.

                        Yep, they've been around for quite a long time, long before the creation of video games. Their start in toys dates back to the hiring of Gunpei Yokoi, who created some of their earliest non-card game items like the Ultra Hand (and would eventually design the GameBoy). The Famicom wasn't even their first video game system; that honor would go to the Color TV Game 6, a Pong clone.

                          nar - Shadowgate had a modern remake 2 years or so ago by the original dev team, via Kickstarter. Their site is here>> and it's on mobile and Steam, apparently. http://www.zojoi.com/shadowgate/

                            First I heard of this was when I went by GameStore on Friday to pick up my CE of Dishonored 2.

                            I walk into the store around 12:30pm, and the guy behind the counter looks up with worry on his face. When I said, "I'm here to pick up Dishonored 2," he sagged with relief, because he'd been dealing with a rush of people all morning, plus phone calls out the yinyang over the Nintendo Classic.

                              I still have my original 'toaster' I replaced the cartridge slot on and a top loader that I need to clean out once I get the tools to open it. Both still work, but the 'toaster' is definitely crankier on some games than the top loader. Maybe I need to do the NES10 chip fix on the 'toaster'. You can tell the top loader was in a smokers house (and I do mean the plural, it smells that bad!); any advice on how to get rid of the smell when I'm able to open it up?

                              Anyway...Nintendo also released a Famicom Classic in Japan, with some of the same games with a few local differences and a few different ones; only comment I have on that is why do they get 2 controllers when we only get 1?
