  • Waiter, DEFINITELY cancel that second wine

I was at a restaurant tonight with my brother and his family (SIL and nephew, 9) and my sister and her daughter, all of whom had come in from out of town. Niece is heading for the end of the teen years. They had opted to rent only one car between them (as they were all staying at the same hotel, it was no hardship). I had driven myself to the restaurant.

Brother, SIL and sis were each having two glasses of wine with dinner. I was feeling left out so thought I might have a second one as well.

Niece: "You can't. YOU have to drive home!" (Technically, she could've driven brother, SIL and sis back to their hotel ... although equally technically, she wasn't "legitimized" to drive the rental car.)

    Me: "Pah. Who'll know?"

Nephew, who was immersed in a game on brother's cellphone, and whom I hadn't thought had been paying any attention, spoke up firmly. "GOD will know."

Okay, well, if you put it that way ...

I opted not to have the second glass, although in all honesty it was more because of the force of niece's argument than nephew's (especially since I'm an agnostic).

Never EVER assume kids aren't paying attention!

The term "god" can be either general (term for a deity) or specific (name of the deity in the Abrahamic religions). As for your nephew's remark, if taken as a general term, Dionysus (Bacchus for those who follow the Roman version of the classical pantheon) would definitely approve of a second glass of wine. If taken as the specific (likely, from capitalization), what was the first public miracle His Son performed? Probable approval there as well.

On a secular note, I agree with your niece.

Good points there, wolfie, but as my brother and my nephew are practicing Catholics ... I'm pretty sure they weren't referring to Dionysus.

And I doubt if a member of My Hometown's Finest would've been impressed with either the Dionysus connection, or the Jesus water-into-wine connection ... although if (Bastet forbid) I ever need an excuse, I might try the latter one and see what happens ...
