  • Bragging on my boyfriend

Back in October, Boyfriend published his first book on Amazon Kindle Direct. We just got the first royalty check from it. Holy FUCK , over $5000. That's not a typo. Over five thousand dollars. On the first check. I could get used to this. And as his editor, I get 10% of his royalties.

Don't forget to set some aside for taxes. You wouldn't want to end up owing would you?
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Good point Considerably more if you file as a 1099/self-employed...>_> But that would be Karl's area of expertise.

Congrats, Kittish (yeah, yeah, and yer BF, too)!!

Already taken care of, half of the royalties Boyfriend gets are being set aside for taxes (and will continue to be with all future royalty checks), and he's planning on talking to the HR folks where he works to increase the deduction from his regular checks just so we don't turn up any nasty surprises. Thanks for the reminder, though, taxguykarl.

I'm just so proud of him, and kind of in shock. I expected his books to do halfway decently but that just blew us both out of the water. And if I've understood Amazon's royalty payment policy correctly that check was JUST for October.

You're on the right track, Eric. Amazon reports their royalty payments on Form 1099...cc'ed to the payees and IRS.
The payees report royalty income on Schedule E.
