  • Well ... we knew it was coming ...

Brother spoke to Mom's nursing home tonight (he and family will be out of the country for about two weeks). They said she is "failing."

Not a big surprise. I went to have lunch with her yesterday ... she ate nothing and staff said she'd eaten nothing for breakfast either. And she was barely responsive to anything I said.

No way of giving a definite time, of course, but I doubt it'll be very long now.

      I'm sorry. I can't even imagine.

        Thanks, guys.

Her 60+ years of heavy-duty smoking didn't help, nor did her flat refusal (even when she was still compos mentis and at home) to accept the diagnosis of diabetes, hypothyroidism, and high blood pressure (those are the ones I know of) and take her meds regularly. It was pretty frustrating. She kept insisting the tests were wrong, the doctor was wrong, she felt fine (even when we could see she was anything but) and ultimately it all took its toll.

Thankfully, she's had excellent care during her years at the nursing home.

Thanks, Akasa. Am trying to call the few friends she had left (none of whom ever visited her in the nursing home, by the way ... ) to let them know.

Save for the diagnoses, that sounds like my grandmother...she hated doctors.

*HUGS* I am so, so sorry.

                      Thanks very much, guys ...

She has her good days and her bad days. The latter are when she doesn't want to eat at all and can't seem to grasp (much less respond to) even simple sentences ("Do you want some Coke?")

Today was one of her definitely better days. I asked if she was in trouble again, because there was a cop car parked in front of the nursing home, and got that sorta smirky grin she used to give.

Have I mentioned how great the nursing home staff are, by the way?

That's great; it makes a lot of difference.
